The Philosophy of the Copenhagen Lip
Forget sharp lines and opaque, heavy color. The Copenhagen-style berry lip is all about a soft, diffused finish that looks more like a natural flush than a cosmetic product. The goal is a “lived-in” effect,
as if you’ve just been eating fresh berries. This trend, with roots in Korean beauty techniques, prioritizes a fresh, radiant complexion and minimal makeup, making the subtle pop of lip color a key focal point. It's a direct contrast to the heavily structured, perfectly defined pouts that have dominated in the past. This look is modern because it’s forgiving, flattering, and feels utterly low-maintenance.
Step 1: Create the Perfect Sheer Base
The secret to a sheer, comfortable stain isn't just the pigment—it's the base you mix it with. You don't need a special product; you likely already own the perfect ingredient. The ideal base is a simple, hydrating lip balm, petroleum jelly, or even a clear, non-sticky gloss. This moisturizing element is what gives the final product its dewy, comfortable feel and prevents the drying effect that many commercial lip stains can have. Start by scooping a small, pea-sized amount onto the back of your clean hand or into a small, clean pot. This will be your mixing palette.
Step 2: Choose and Mix Your Pigments
Now for the color. This is where you become your own custom makeup artist. The beauty of this method is using lipsticks you already own to create your perfect shade of berry. For a classic look, scrape a tiny amount from a red, plum, or deep pink lipstick. A little goes a very long way, so start with less than you think you need. Use a small spatula, a clean cotton swab, or even the end of a tweezer to add the lipstick pigment to your balm base. Mix the two together thoroughly until the color is even and free of streaks. Keep adding tiny specks of lipstick and blending until you reach your desired depth. Don't be afraid to mix multiple lipstick shades—a touch of nude can soften a bright red, while a hint of plum can deepen a pink.
Step 3: Master the Lived-In Application
Application is what truly defines this look. Instead of a brush or the lipstick bullet, your fingertip is your best tool. Tap your finger into the custom-mixed stain and press it onto the center of your lips first. Then, gently blend and blur the color outward toward the edges. The goal is to have the most concentration of color in the middle, fading out to a soft, undefined edge. This technique creates the illusion of natural fullness without the need for harsh lip liner. Don’t strive for perfection; a slightly smudged, imperfect edge is part of the charm. For a more matte, stain-like effect, you can gently blot your lips with a tissue after application to remove excess shine.
Customizing Your Copenhagen Color
While "berry" is the classic choice, this formula is endlessly adaptable. For fairer skin tones, a sheer rose or raspberry can provide a beautiful flush of color. Medium skin tones are complemented wonderfully by deeper raspberry and wine shades. Rich plums and dark blackberries look stunning on deeper skin tones. The key is to see the formula as a template for experimentation. You can create a brighter pop of red for an evening out or a barely-there nude-berry for everyday wear, all using the same simple technique of mixing pigment into a moisturizing base.
