Start With the Right Coat
The foundation of your Targaryen transformation is the coat itself. Look for a long, dark coat—black, charcoal gray, or even a deep burgundy will work perfectly. The material matters less than the silhouette. A simple wool-blend overcoat, a faux-leather
trench, or even a heavy fabric duster can be adapted. The key is length and a structure that you can work with. Ideally, it should have a simple collar and front, as this provides a blank canvas for your modifications. Avoid coats with busy patterns, excessive buttons, or a fit that’s too restrictive. You want something you can move in, project power in, and, most importantly, alter without needing a sewing machine.
Create the Dramatic Silhouette
Targaryen style is all about commanding presence, which means dramatic lines. Characters like Rhaenyra and Daemon Targaryen are often seen in garments with strong, structured shoulders and flowing, cape-like elements. To achieve this without sewing, focus on draping and pinning. You can create a broader shoulder line by adding simple, no-sew shoulder pads, or even by strategically folding and pinning the fabric at the shoulder to give it more lift. For a more regal, cape-like feel, you can leave the coat unbuttoned and use a belt to cinch it at the waist, letting the back flow freely. For a more advanced, yet still no-sew option, consider cutting arm slits into the sides of the coat, allowing you to wear it like a true cape. Simply lay the coat flat, measure where your arms would comfortably exit, and make vertical cuts. This instantly changes the garment’s entire profile.
Add the Signature Dragon Scales
The most iconic detail of many Targaryen outfits is the dragon-scale texture. While the show's costumers use intricate smocking techniques, you can create a similar effect with some clever crafting. One of the easiest methods involves using puffy fabric paint. On the shoulders, lapels, or cuffs of your coat, draw a repeating 'U' shape to mimic scales. Let it dry completely, and you’ll have a raised, textured pattern. For a more three-dimensional look, cut small, scale-shaped pieces from black or gray craft foam or faux leather. Then, starting from the bottom and working your way up, hot glue them in overlapping rows onto the shoulders or a section of the chest. This creates a convincing, armored look that immediately reads 'dragon rider'.
Incorporate House Colors: Red and Black
The official colors of House Targaryen are black and red, symbolizing 'Fire and Blood'. Your dark coat already provides the black base, so the next step is to strategically add red. A simple, no-sew way to do this is with a fabric sash or belt. Find a long strip of red fabric—velvet or satin can add a touch of royalty—and tie it dramatically around your waist. Another powerful addition is the Targaryen sigil: the red three-headed dragon. You can find iron-on patches of the sigil online or at craft stores to add to the chest or back of the coat. Alternatively, create your own stencil and use red fabric paint to apply the iconic dragon emblem to a prominent spot on your costume.
Accessorize for the Iron Throne
Accessories are what elevate a good costume into a great one. A wide, faux-leather belt cinched over your coat will create a more martial, imposing silhouette, reminiscent of Daemon's look. Look for ornate, silver-toned brooches to fasten the coat at the chest; dragon-themed jewelry is a clear winner here. Gloves are also a must—black leather or simple fabric gloves add a layer of polish and authority. And of course, no Targaryen is complete without their signature silver-white hair. A platinum blonde wig, perhaps styled with a few intricate braids, is essential to complete the transformation from ordinary citizen to a ruler of Westeros. These final touches are what truly sell the character.
