The most fundamental element is the material itself. Garments designed for movement often use fabrics with inherent flexibility. Knitted fabrics like jersey have natural stretch, making them ideal for tops and dresses that need to move with you. For woven
materials, which are typically more rigid, the inclusion of a small percentage of elastane or spandex can introduce crucial give without altering the fabric's appearance. A garment made from a stiff, unforgiving woven with no stretch is a red flag for restricted movement.
2. The Concept of “Ease”
In sewing, “ease” is the room in a garment beyond your exact body measurements. There are two types: wearing ease and design ease. Wearing ease is the minimum space needed to breathe, sit, and raise your arms. If a woven garment has zero ease, it will fit like a second skin and you won't be able to move. Design ease is extra room added to create a specific silhouette, like an oversized coat. A well-designed piece for daily life has just enough wearing ease built in, especially across the bust, waist, and hips.
3. The Action Back (or Bi-Swing Back)
Ever notice those pleats on the back of a jacket near the shoulders? That’s often an “action back.” This feature, also called a bi-swing back, is designed to expand when you reach your arms forward, giving you a greater range of motion without the whole jacket pulling tight across your back. It's a classic detail in sportswear and high-quality outerwear for a reason—it’s pure function.
4. Underarm Gussets
A gusset is a small, often diamond-shaped piece of fabric inserted into a seam to add space and strength. When placed under the arm, it allows you to lift your arms higher without the entire body of the shirt or jacket hiking up. It's a subtle but powerful indicator that a designer considered how the wearer would actually move, not just how they would stand still.
5. Functional Pleats and Vents
Pleats aren't just decorative; they are a brilliant way to build movement into a structured garment. A kick pleat at the hem of a narrow pencil skirt is what allows you to walk without taking tiny, shuffling steps. Similarly, box pleats or inverted pleats on the back of a shirt provide extra room for your shoulder blades to move. The single or double vent on the back of a suit jacket serves the same purpose, allowing the jacket to drape properly when you sit or reach into a pocket.
6. High and Well-Shaped Armholes
This might seem counterintuitive, but a higher, closer-fitting armhole often provides better movement than a low, sloppy one. When the armhole is cut correctly to follow the natural crease of your shoulder and armpit, you can move your arm without the whole side of the garment lifting with it. Low, large armholes can be a sign of less precise tailoring and can actually be more restrictive.
7. Articulated Knees and Elbows
In performance outerwear and some workwear, you'll see extra seams or darts around the knees and elbows. This is called articulation. By pre-shaping these high-bend areas, the designer prevents the fabric from pulling tight and restricting you when you bend your limbs. It’s a clear signal that the garment was built for an active life.
8. Smart Seam Construction
The way a garment is held together matters. In activewear, look for flatlock seams, which are smooth and prevent chafing. For everyday knits, an overlock stitch allows the seam itself to stretch with the fabric. On high-end, delicate woven garments, French seams provide a clean finish but have no give. The choice of seam reveals the garment's intended purpose; a stretchy seam signals a garment meant for motion.
