The decline of natural civet didn't spell the end of its influence. Instead, it spurred innovation. Chemists successfully synthesized civetone, the key molecule responsible for its distinctive character. This lab-created version provides the same musky warmth and fixative properties without any animal cruelty. Today, virtually all mainstream perfumes that list a civet note, including modern formulations of classics like Chanel No. 5, use a synthetic version. This shift ensures the effect of civet outlasts any single trend.
