So, how can you spot the good stuff? While it can be tricky, here’s what to look for. First, check the tags and online product descriptions. Brands that invest in more expensive reactive dyeing processes are usually proud of it. Look for phrases like “fade-resistant,” “color-fast,” “reactive dye,” or proprietary names like “Everblack.” These are clear signals that the jeans were built to last. Second, consider the brand. Premium denim companies and those that specialize in timeless basics are more likely to use higher-quality dyes than fast-fashion brands, where the low cost of sulfur dyeing is more appealing. If the product description is vague, you can often assume it’s a standard sulfur dye. While you can't always tell just by looking, jeans made with reactive dyes often feel slightly softer from the start and lack that faint chemical smell associated with some cheaper sulfur-dyed pairs.
