The Other Emmy Awards

Before that, however, the Creative Arts Emmys take place over two nights, dedicated to the craftspeople who build shows from the ground up. Think of it this way: if the Primetime ceremony celebrates the faces you see on screen, the Creative Arts Emmys celebrate the army of artists who make sure there's a world worth seeing behind them. This distinction was formally created in 1970 to handle the growing number of award categories and to give technical and artistic disciplines their own moment of recognition.
Celebrating the Architects of Television
The Creative Arts categories honor the work that creates a show's entire look and feel. Awards for Outstanding Production Design recognize the teams that build everything from the sterile, unsettling offices in a sci-fi thriller to the opulent courts of a period drama. Costume and hairstyling awards celebrate the artists who define characters through their appearance, while makeup awards—especially for prosthetics—honor the incredible transformations that can make an actor unrecognizable. These are the awards that recognize the visual language of a series. Cinematography awards go to the directors of photography who frame the shots and light the scenes, creating the mood and tone in every frame. Without these foundational crafts, even the best script would just be words on a page.

It's not all “technical” awards, either. The Creative Arts ceremonies also present some highly anticipated performance categories, most notably Outstanding Guest Actor and Actress in a Comedy and Drama Series. These awards often generate significant buzz and give acclaimed actors a chance to be recognized for memorable, short-term roles. Furthermore, the Creative Arts Emmys are where genres that rely heavily on world-building and visual spectacle often dominate. Sci-fi, fantasy, and ambitious animated programs frequently rack up numerous awards for their special effects, design, and animation, even if they don't always win the top prizes at the main ceremony. The recent first night of the 78th Emmy Awards, for example, saw big wins for variety, reality, and nonfiction programming, with Bad Bunny's Super Bowl halftime show and the reality series "The Traitors" taking home multiple awards.
