Behind every seamless live performance is a professional intercom system, often just called "comms." Think of it as the production's central nervous system. This isn't a set of walkie-talkies; it's a sophisticated, dedicated network that allows key crew
members to communicate instantly and clearly, regardless of the roaring crowd or backstage noise. The basic components are a base station, which acts as the central hub, and a series of headsets worn by the crew. These headsets are connected to beltpacks, which allow each user to select different channels and control their volume. The entire setup is designed for one purpose: to ensure that every cue is executed with split-second precision.
The Conductor in the Booth
At the heart of this communication network is the show caller, a role often filled by the stage manager or a technical director. This person is the conductor of the entire technical orchestra. From a control booth or a desk with a view of the stage, they follow a meticulously planned script, or "run sheet," that contains every single technical cue. They are the single voice of authority during the show, calling out commands like "Standby LX Q5" (lighting cue) or "Sound Q10, GO." Each department—lighting, sound, video, automation—listens on a dedicated channel, waiting for their specific instructions. When the show caller gives a standby call, the operator for that department must confirm they are ready. This closed-loop communication ensures no cue is ever missed.
Speaking Different Languages, on Different Channels
Chaos is prevented by segmentation. Not everyone needs to hear every command. A modern comms system operates on multiple channels, often called "party lines." The lighting team might be on Channel A, the audio team on Channel B, and the stagehands on Channel C. The show caller can speak to all of them at once or address a single department privately. This prevents information overload and ensures operators only hear the cues relevant to them. For example, the follow-spot operator doesn't need to hear the audio engineer adjusting a microphone level. This ability to create private and group conversations is what turns a potential cacophony of voices into a structured and efficient workflow, allowing dozens of people to coordinate complex actions simultaneously without a single mistake reaching the audience.
Wired Reliability and Wireless Freedom
The technology behind these systems is a specialized field dominated by companies like Clear-Com, RTS, and Riedel. For decades, these systems were hardwired for maximum reliability—a dropped connection is not an option during a live show. Wired systems are still the backbone for stationary positions like the lighting board operator or the audio engineer at the front-of-house console. However, the rise of high-quality wireless technology has been a game-changer, giving mobile crew members like stage managers and camera operators the freedom to move around without being tethered by a cable.
