What Exactly Is Glance?
Glance is not an app you download; it's a 'smart surface' platform that integrates directly into the operating system of Android smartphones. Pioneered in Asia and backed by major players like Google, the platform serves a dynamic mix of content—news,
entertainment, games, and more—directly to the lock screen. Instead of seeing a static wallpaper, users see a rotating carousel of personalized information. After reaching hundreds of millions of devices abroad, Glance has set its sights on the U.S. market, piloting its service with partners like Verizon and Motorola before a wider rollout.
The Pivot from Content to Commerce
While the initial hook is content, Glance’s ambition is commerce. The platform is pioneering a model often called 'agentic commerce' or 'discovery-first shopping'. This shifts the paradigm from the user actively searching for a product (the Amazon or Google model) to products finding the user in a moment of passive discovery. Glance uses generative AI to create a hyper-personalized shopping experience. A user can upload a single selfie, and the platform’s AI will generate photorealistic images of them in various curated outfits, factoring in personal style, body type, and even the local weather.
The 'Zero-Intent' Shopping Experience
This model thrives on what can be called 'zero-intent' interactions. You don't unlock your phone intending to shop; you unlock it to check the time or a message. In that instant, Glance presents an outfit or product that sparks your interest. The platform analyzes 'digital body language'—like how long you pause on an image or your swipe speed—to continuously refine its recommendations. For its U.S. launch on millions of Samsung devices, Glance partnered with over 400 brands, allowing users to tap and purchase items directly from these AI-generated images. It’s a low-friction, high-impulse system designed to turn idle screen time into a shopping opportunity.
The U.S. Push: A New Frontier, New Challenges
Bringing this model to the United States involves significant partnerships and investments. Glance has committed hundreds of millions to develop its AI technology stack, leveraging Google's Gemini AI and Imagen tools. Its partnership with Samsung makes the Glance AI experience available as an opt-in feature on an estimated 50 million Galaxy devices. More recently, Glance and Samsung announced they are expanding this agentic commerce experience to millions of smart TVs in the U.S., turning the living room screen into another interactive shopping surface. However, the company faces a market with ingrained consumer habits and heightened privacy awareness. To address this, Glance emphasizes that its U.S. platform is opt-in and that its AI relies on usage patterns rather than collecting personal data to power recommendations.
Is It Really a Reinvention?
The term 'reinvention' is strong, and Glance isn't likely to replace traditional e-commerce overnight. You'll still go to Amazon when you know you need a specific brand of paper towels. But Glance is fundamentally changing the discovery phase of shopping. It’s creating an entirely new channel for brands to reach consumers before they even open a browser or social media app. By transforming static surfaces like lock screens and TV ambient screens into interactive, shoppable experiences, it's building a new layer of commerce that is more integrated, personal, and spontaneous. It solves the problem of 'choice fatigue' by eliminating the need to scroll through endless product lists and instead serving up a curated feed where you are the model.
