The master of horror was a colossal Ramones fan, even referencing them in novels like 'Pet Sematary.' When the time came to adapt that very book for the screen, King wanted his favorite band to write a theme song. He invited the Ramones to his home in Bangor, Maine. While a dinner definitely happened, the exact details are foggy, as they often are in rock history. Drummer Marky Ramone remembered a visit to King's home, while King himself recalled a dinner at a local restaurant. What everyone agrees on is what happened next. King gave Dee Dee a copy of the 'Pet Sematary' novel.
A Song from the Basement
Dee Dee, never one for sitting still, reportedly took the book, retreated to a basement or a quiet corner, and emerged in about an hour with a complete set of lyrics. In that short window, he had downloaded the entire vibe of King’s novel—its themes of grief, loss, and the horror of unwanted resurrection—and distilled it into a three-minute punk-pop masterpiece. The iconic chorus, “I don't want to be buried in a pet sematary / I don't want to live my life again,” was a perfect Ramones hook: catchy, morbid, and deceptively simple. It captured the book's central dread while also resonating with Dee Dee’s own personal demons and weariness. It was a moment of pure, uncut genius, the kind of thing that could only happen with a creative force as unpredictable as Dee Dee Ramone.
The Birth of a Problem Child
But the brilliance of the song’s creation was immediately met with the hard reality of its recording. This is where the “defending it” part of the story begins. To make “Pet Sematary” a radio hit, producers were brought in to give it a more commercial, polished sound. This was a direct conflict with the band's raw, stripped-down ethos. The track featured a more complex, almost ballad-like structure with arpeggiated chords that guitarist Johnny Ramone, the staunch guardian of the band’s three-chord purity, reportedly struggled to play. It was a departure from their signature buzzsaw attack, a concession to the mainstream that caused friction within the band.
