Myth: It’s an 'Acid' That Exfoliates
Let’s get the biggest misconception out of the way. When people hear “acid” in skincare, they often think of exfoliants like glycolic or salicylic acid, which peel away dead skin cells. Hyaluronic acid (HA) doesn't do that at all. It’s called an acid because
of its chemical pH, not its function. Think of it less as a skin resurfacer and more as a moisture magnet. It's a type of sugar molecule, a glycosaminoglycan, that your body produces naturally to keep tissues like your skin, eyes, and joints lubricated and cushioned. Its main job is to attract and hold onto water, giving your skin that supple, hydrated feeling.
Myth: It Magically Creates Moisture
Hyaluronic acid is a humectant, meaning it draws in moisture. But it doesn't create water from nothing; it has to pull it from somewhere. In a humid environment, it will pull water vapor from the air and bind it to your skin. This is the ideal scenario. However, in a very dry climate—or a room with dry, centrally-heated air—it can't find moisture in the environment. So, it pulls water from the next available source: the deeper layers of your own skin. If you don't seal that in, the water can evaporate from the surface, potentially leaving your skin feeling even tighter and drier than before.
The Fix: Use It on Damp Skin and Seal It In
The key to making hyaluronic acid work for you, not against you, is application. Always apply it to slightly damp skin. After cleansing, leave your skin a little damp or use a facial mist, then apply your HA serum. This gives the molecule external water to grab onto immediately. But don't stop there. You must follow up with a moisturizer within about a minute. The moisturizer acts as an occlusive layer, creating a seal that locks in the hydration the HA just attracted. Think of it as a two-step process: the hyaluronic acid brings the water, and the moisturizer tells it where to stay.
Myth: It’s Only for Dry Skin
Because it’s such a hydration powerhouse, many assume HA is only for people with dry, flaky skin. In reality, it's beneficial for all skin types, including oily and acne-prone skin. Oily skin is often dehydrated, meaning it lacks water, not oil. When skin is dehydrated, it can overcompensate by producing even more oil. By providing lightweight, water-based hydration, hyaluronic acid can help balance the skin and regulate oil production without clogging pores. Its non-greasy, lightweight texture is often ideal for those who find traditional heavy creams uncomfortable.
Myth: More Is Always Better
It can be tempting to slather on a thick layer of a product you love, but with hyaluronic acid, a little goes a long way. Using too much can sometimes leave a sticky or tacky residue on the skin, which can interfere with the application of other products like makeup or sunscreen. Furthermore, a super-high concentration of HA isn't necessarily more effective. Products are often formulated with a mix of different molecular weights of hyaluronic acid. Higher-weight molecules sit on the surface to prevent water loss, while lower-weight molecules penetrate a bit deeper for more lasting hydration. A well-formulated product with 1-2% hyaluronic acid is typically very effective.
