Ignoring the Power Problem
Power is the single most common point of failure for any large-scale sound system, and on the playa, it’s a constant battle. The problem starts with assuming any generator will do. Power from consumer-grade generators is often inconsistent and “dirty,”
with voltage fluctuations that can damage sensitive audio gear. A professional setup requires clean, stable power. Camps often make the mistake of running everything—sound, lights, and the kitchen’s coffee maker—off a single, overloaded system. This is a recipe for tripped breakers and, in worse cases, brown-outs that can fry expensive amplifiers. The solution is a dedicated power strategy: use high-quality, well-maintained generators, distribute the load across multiple circuits, and keep audio on a completely separate system from lighting and other camp utilities to avoid interference and disaster.
Underestimating the Alkaline Dust
Playa dust isn’t just dirt; it’s a fine, alkaline powder that is the mortal enemy of electronics. It gets into everything: faders on a DJ mixer become scratchy and unusable, cooling fans on amplifiers seize up causing them to overheat, and connections become unreliable. Some camps believe simply having gear in a tent is enough. It’s not. Dust storms can blow fine particles through any unsealed opening. Smart camps take extreme preventative measures. Flight cases and covers are non-negotiable. Some even cover mixer sliders with clear plastic, taping it down to create a seal. Another pro-tip is to use nylon stockings or special filters over ventilation openings to trap dust while allowing some airflow. Don't use canned air to clean gear on-site, as it can blow the corrosive dust deeper into the equipment. A post-event deep clean is essential, but prevention is what saves the set.
Botching Speaker Placement and Tuning
The open playa is a unique acoustic environment. With almost no surfaces for sound to reflect off of, what the audience hears comes almost exclusively from your speakers. This can be a blessing, but it also exposes every flaw in your setup. A common error is poor speaker placement, creating weird audio gaps or, worse, phase cancellation where bass frequencies from different speakers cancel each other out, killing the dance floor’s energy. Another issue is tuning for the wrong distance. The dry desert air absorbs high frequencies more rapidly, meaning a system tuned to sound good 20 feet away will sound dull and muffled 100 feet away. Large-scale sound camps must follow Burning Man's strict rules, pointing all main speakers away from the city and towards the open playa to manage sound bleed. Proper sound design involves careful placement, using delays to sync speakers, and tuning the system for the entire intended listening area.
Skimping on Cables and Connections
Cables are the least glamorous part of a sound system, which is why they’re often an afterthought. This is a huge mistake. On the playa, everything is under constant stress from foot traffic, vehicle traffic, and extreme temperature swings that cause materials to expand and contract. A cheap cable that works fine in a studio can easily fail. Bad connections can introduce hum, crackles, or cut out entirely. The key is to invest in high-quality, durable cables and manage them obsessively. Use cable ramps to protect runs that cross pathways, secure every connection with gaffer tape, and keep spares of everything. Remember that a 45,000-watt sound system is only as strong as the cheapest, most abused quarter-inch connector in the chain.
Forgetting About Heat and Redundancy
The Black Rock Desert is a place of extremes. Equipment that runs perfectly in a temperate climate can quickly overheat and shut down under the relentless sun. Amplifiers and processors need to be in a shaded, well-ventilated area to survive. But even with perfect preparation, things fail. This is where redundancy comes in. What happens if the primary DJ mixer dies? Or if an audio interface suddenly refuses to work, as famously happened to Bassnectar one year? Professional camps have a backup plan. This could mean having a second, smaller mixer ready to go or ensuring every DJ brings a backup of their music on a different medium. The goal isn't just to build a system that works, but to build a system that can withstand a point of failure without the entire party grinding to a halt.
