By the late 1940s, Nat King Cole was more than a star; he was an American institution. With his velvet voice and sophisticated piano skills, he had crossed over from jazz clubs to mainstream pop charts, becoming one of the most beloved entertainers in the country.
He was the epitome of polished professionalism, a figure whose smooth sound defined an era of post-war optimism. His concerts were major events, and in 1947, he was headlining at a Los Angeles theater, unaware that a chance encounter was about to deliver a song that would become synonymous with his name and introduce a radical new voice to the American public.
The Man from Under the Sign
The song's author was a man named eden ahbez, and he was nothing like the polished performers of the day. Decades before the hippie movement, ahbez was living a counter-culture dream. Born George Aberle, he adopted his new name—insisting on lowercase letters because he felt only God and Infinity were worthy of capitalization—and embraced a philosophy of natural living. He had long hair and a beard, wore flowing robes, and subsisted on a diet of raw fruits and vegetables. For a time, he famously camped out in the open air directly beneath the first "L" of the Hollywood sign, a genuine mystic hiding in plain sight of the world's entertainment capital.
A Fateful Hand-Off
The story of how ahbez's song reached Cole has become the stuff of legend. Knowing Cole was performing in town, ahbez went to the theater hoping to give him the sheet music for a song he’d written called "Nature Boy." Denied access backstage, the determined but gentle songwriter left the tattered manuscript with Cole's valet or a stagehand, hoping it would find its way to the star. It did. Cole was immediately captivated by the song's haunting melody and its profound, simple lyrics. He began performing it live to great acclaim, but there was a problem: he couldn't release it without permission from the songwriter, who had vanished without leaving any contact information. After a search, ahbez was finally located, still living his ascetic life under the Hollywood sign, and gave his blessing.
The Song That Broke the Mold
"Nature Boy" was released on March 29, 1948, and it was utterly unique. The song tells the tale of a "very strange enchanted boy" who wanders the world only to conclude that "The greatest thing you'll ever learn / Is just to love and be loved in return." With its mystical theme, flute-led orchestration, and philosophical core, it sounded like nothing else on the radio. Capitol Records was reportedly hesitant, but Cole's belief in the song paid off. It shot to number one on the Billboard charts and stayed there for eight weeks, selling over a million copies and solidifying Cole's status as a solo superstar who could connect with both Black and white audiences.
A Shadow of Controversy
The song's meteoric success brought ahbez into the national spotlight, but it also brought legal trouble. A Yiddish theater composer named Herman Yablokoff sued for plagiarism, claiming the melody was lifted from his 1935 song "Shvayg Mayn Harts" ("Be Still My Heart"). Ahbez claimed he heard the melody from "angels" in the California mountains, but the case was eventually settled out of court, with Yablokoff receiving a payment of around $25,000. Some musicologists have also noted a similarity to a theme in Antonín Dvořák's Piano Quintet No. 2, suggesting all three composers may have drawn from a common Eastern European folk tradition. Despite the dispute, the song's authorship and its powerful message remained forever linked to the eccentric proto-hippie who wrote it.
