1. Timing Your Hair Removal
A smooth surface is essential, but timing is everything. Whether you shave or wax, complete your hair removal at least 24 hours before your spray tan appointment. Waxing should be done even earlier, ideally 48 hours in advance, to ensure your skin has
time to calm down. This waiting period allows your pores to close, preventing the tanning solution from settling into them and creating tiny dark dots, a tell-tale sign of rushed prep.
2. The Critical Exfoliation Step
This is the single most important part of your prep routine. About 24 hours before your appointment, exfoliate your entire body. This removes dead skin cells that can cause a patchy, uneven application. Use a gentle, oil-free scrub or, even better, an exfoliating mitt for the best results. Pay special attention to drier areas like your elbows, knees, ankles, and hands, as these spots tend to absorb more color and can become unnaturally dark if not properly sloughed.
3. Hydrate Before, But Not the Day Of
Well-hydrated skin helps a tan last longer and fade more evenly. In the days leading up to your appointment, moisturize your body and drink plenty of water. However, on the day of your spray tan, your skin should be completely clean and free of any products. Lotions, oils, perfumes, and even deodorant can create a barrier on the skin, blocking the tanning solution from being absorbed properly and leading to streaks or uneven patches.
4. Arrive with a Clean Canvas
On the day of your tan, it's best to shower, but do so several hours before your appointment time. Use a simple, sulfate-free body wash and avoid anything that's overly moisturizing or oil-based. A final cool water rinse can help ensure your pores are closed. Arrive at the salon with completely bare skin—no makeup, no deodorant, and no lotion. Many salons offer wipes to remove any last-minute products if needed.
5. Dress for Tanning Success
What you wear to and from your appointment is crucial for protecting the fresh tan. The rule is simple: loose, dark clothing. Tight clothes, like leggings, skinny jeans, or even a restrictive bra, can rub against your skin and cause streaks or smudges while the tan is developing. Opt for a loose-fitting dress, baggy sweatpants, and an oversized t-shirt. For footwear, choose flip-flops or slides to avoid smudging the tan on your feet and ankles.
6. Plan Your Post-Tan Hours
Once you're tanned, the work is done, but you still need to be mindful for several hours. The solution needs time to develop, a process that can take anywhere from 3 to 24 hours depending on the formula. During this time, it is essential to avoid any contact with water, which includes showering, swimming, and even sweating. Strenuous exercise is off-limits until after your first rinse. Let the solution work its magic without interruption.
