The Action Maestro First on Board
When 20th Century Fox greenlit Speed, they had a specific sound in mind for their high-concept thriller. To get it, they hired the safest pair of hands in the business: Michael Kamen. By the mid-90s, Kamen was Hollywood's go-to composer for blockbuster
action. With a resume that included the Lethal Weapon franchise, the first three Die Hard films, and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, he was a titan of the genre, known for his masterful blend of traditional orchestra with rock-and-roll energy. His involvement signaled the studio's intent to give the film a classic, robust action score. Director Jan de Bont, a seasoned cinematographer making his directorial debut, was initially on board, and Kamen was officially hired for the job.
A Sudden and Mysterious Exit
The plan, however, fell apart. Accounts vary on the exact reason, but the consensus is that Kamen was suddenly off the project. Some sources point to a simple scheduling conflict, a common issue for an in-demand composer juggling multiple massive films. But in a later interview, composer Mark Mancina, who would ultimately score the film, revealed that director Jan de Bont made a conscious choice to go in a different direction. Despite having the legendary Kamen signed on, de Bont wanted a different, more modern sound and decided to replace him. It was a bold and risky move for a first-time director, parting ways with a proven hitmaker in favor of an unknown quantity.
Enter the Underdog Composer
With Kamen out, de Bont turned to Mark Mancina. At the time, Mancina was a talented but much less established composer working within Hans Zimmer's influential Media Ventures studio. He had contributed additional music to films like True Romance and The Lion King but had yet to land a major solo project of this scale. De Bont had been impressed by some of Mancina's work and, against the studio's preference for a bigger name, advocated for him. Mancina was given the job, but with an almost impossible deadline: he had just a few weeks to write, arrange, and record the entire score for a film built on non-stop momentum.
Forging a New Sound Out of Necessity
That intense pressure cooker became a creative catalyst. Instead of mimicking the traditional orchestral sound Kamen might have produced, Mancina took a radical approach. He decided the score's percussion shouldn't just accompany the bus—it should be the bus. He had a friend go to a metal yard and record a library of unique metallic sounds: scraping hubcaps, screeching metal, and industrial clangs. Mancina then replaced the entire orchestral percussion section with these custom-sampled sounds. He layered this brutal, metallic rhythm under a powerful orchestral theme and atmospheric guitar work from legendary guitarist Allan Holdsworth. The result was a hybrid sound that was completely fresh—relentless, modern, and inextricably linked to the mechanics of the film's plot. It wasn't just music about a bus; it was music made from a bus.
A Legacy of Last-Minute Genius
Mark Mancina's score for Speed was a revelation. It not only perfectly captured the film's kinetic energy but also went on to define the sound of action movies for the rest of the decade. The metallic, sample-heavy style became a popular template, and Mancina himself was catapulted onto the A-list, going on to score other 90s hits like Twister and Bad Boys.
