Infrasound: The Hum You Feel, Not Hear
One of the most powerful tools in a sound designer's arsenal is something you can't even consciously hear: infrasound. These are extremely low-frequency sound waves, below the typical range of human hearing (under 20 Hz). While you won't perceive it as a distinct
noise, your body feels it as a vibration. This sensation can provoke feelings of anxiety, unease, and even fear, triggering a primal fight-or-flight response. Your brain senses a threat without knowing why, associating it with natural warnings like earthquakes or the growl of a predator. Filmmakers use this to build a pervasive sense of dread throughout a scene, making you feel anxious long before the jump scare arrives. It's the reason a seemingly quiet room in a movie can feel so incredibly tense.
Diegetic Deception: When Real Sounds Lie
In film, sound is either diegetic (originating from the story's world, like footsteps or dialogue) or non-diegetic (coming from outside, like the musical score). Thrillers love to blur this line. A sound designer might take a perfectly normal autumn sound—like the wind rustling dry leaves—and subtly amplify or distort it. That familiar sound, now just slightly 'off,' becomes a source of menace. Is it just the wind, or is someone there? This technique makes the film's world feel both realistic and threatening. The snap of a twig is a classic example; it's a natural, diegetic sound, but in a horror context, it’s a clear signal of danger that ramps up tension instantly.
Dissonance and Atonality: Music That Hurts
The traditional rules of music are often thrown out the window for a thriller's score. Instead of pleasant harmonies, composers use dissonance—playing notes that clash, like two adjacent keys on a piano—to create a jarring, unstable feeling. This lack of resolution makes our brains uncomfortable. The sound feels 'wrong' and creates a sense of psychological distress. Think of the screeching violins in "Psycho." Another technique is atonality, where the music avoids a central key or melodic center, making it unpredictable and disorienting. It prevents the audience from finding comfort or anticipating where the music will go, mirroring the protagonist's own fear and confusion.
The Weaponized Absence of Sound
Just as important as the noise is the silence. A sudden, complete absence of sound in a tense scene is incredibly effective. Our brains expect continuous auditory input, and when it's abruptly taken away, we immediately go on high alert. This sonic vacuum forces you to lean in and listen harder, straining to hear the very thing you're afraid of. Sound designers use this to build unbearable anticipation right before a jump scare. By dropping all the ambient noise and music, they create a void that the eventual loud noise—the monster's roar, a sudden crash—fills with maximum shocking impact. The silence itself becomes a promise of terror.
Familiar Sounds, Twisted Meanings
Horror sound design often co-opts sounds we associate with life and safety and turns them into something sinister. A heartbeat, for example, can be used to symbolize rising panic when a character is hiding. A child's laughter or a music box tune, normally innocent, becomes deeply unsettling when placed in a dark, abandoned house. Distorting a human voice—slowing it down, pitching it weirdly, or adding an unnatural echo—is another common trick. This works by taking something deeply familiar and making it alien, which our brains register as a serious threat. It taps into our fear of the uncanny, where the normal world is warped into a nightmare.
