Embrace the 'Rule of Three'
The sprawling lineup is both a blessing and a curse. With so many artists, it's easy to create a minute-by-minute spreadsheet that falls apart the second you hit your first food truck craving. Instead, try the 'Rule of Three.' For each day, pick just
three acts that are your absolute must-sees. These are your anchors. Everything else you see—a DJ set you stumble upon, a smaller band your friend loves, a magical performance at the Cocktail Magic Stage—is a bonus. This approach frees you from the tyranny of the schedule, letting you discover new music organically while ensuring you still catch your top-tier favorites like The Strokes, Charli XCX, or RÜFÜS DU SOL.
Master the Map Before You Go
Golden Gate Park is enormous, and Outside Lands transforms it into a city within a city. Trying to figure out the layout when you're surrounded by 75,000 people is a recipe for frustration. Before you leave home, download the official Outside Lands app and study the festival map. Get a sense of where the main stages—Lands End, Sutro, and Twin Peaks—are in relation to each other. Pinpoint key locations like water refill stations, restrooms, and designated chill zones. Knowing the basic geography means you can navigate between sets with confidence, saving precious time and energy for the actual experience.
Pack Like a Pro, Not a Mule
The bag policy is strict: clear bags only, unless it's a small clutch or fanny pack. This is a blessing in disguise, forcing you to pack only the essentials. Your non-negotiables are comfortable shoes you don't mind getting dirty, a portable phone charger, and layers. San Francisco weather is famously fickle; a sunny afternoon can turn into a cold, foggy night in an instant. A jacket or hoodie you can tie around your waist or stash in a locker is a classic pro move. Also, bring an empty reusable water bottle to take advantage of the free refill stations and stay hydrated.
Strategize Your Food and Drink
Outside Lands is as much a food festival as a music festival, with amazing options from Wine Lands and Beer Lands to dozens of top-tier local vendors. But lines can be long and prices can be steep. This year, look for the "Snack Series" symbol at participating booths. These vendors will offer smaller, lower-priced versions of popular dishes, allowing you to sample more without breaking the bank or spending your favorite set waiting for tacos. Decide on one or two "destination" food items you really want to try, and fit them in during less popular music times to avoid the biggest crowds.
Figure Out Your Exit Strategy First
Getting into the festival is one thing; getting home is another. There is no official event parking, and driving is highly discouraged. The best plan is the one you make in advance. Your festival wristband actually includes all-day fare for Muni buses and trains (excluding cable cars). SFMTA runs extra service on key lines like the N Judah and 5R Fulton Rapid, plus special 5X express buses to get people out of the park at night. If you're using a rideshare service like Lyft, head to the designated pickup zones to avoid chaos. Knowing exactly how you're getting home lets you enjoy that final headliner without a cloud of logistical dread hanging over you.
