The Girl, Her Grandma, and the Ocean
Our story begins on the idyllic island of Motunui, where Moana, the chief's daughter, is torn between her duty to her people and a magnetic pull to the open sea. Her father, Chief Tui, forbids anyone from venturing beyond the reef, haunted by a past tragedy.
But Moana's free-spirited Gramma Tala encourages her adventurous side, telling her stories of the island's origins and a time when their people were master wayfinders. From a young age, Moana has a mystical connection with the ocean, which seems to have chosen her for a special purpose.
A Dying Island and an Ancient Curse
The central conflict isn't just Moana's wanderlust; a mysterious blight is poisoning Motunui. The coconuts are rotting, and the fish have vanished from the lagoon. Gramma Tala reveals the truth on her deathbed: the world is succumbing to a curse unleashed a millennium ago when the demigod Maui stole the heart of Te Fiti, the mother island and goddess of creation. This heart, a small green stone, is the source of life itself. As she passes, Tala gives Moana the heart, which the ocean presented to her as a child, and tasks her with finding Maui and restoring it.
Meeting the Reluctant Demigod
Moana sets sail alone (with her stowaway rooster, Heihei) and, after a typhoon, washes ashore on the island where Maui has been exiled for a thousand years. Voiced by Dwayne Johnson, this Maui isn't the noble hero of legend, but an arrogant and washed-up demigod whose power comes from his magical fishhook. He initially traps Moana and steals her boat, wanting nothing to do with her quest. But Moana, being incredibly persistent, convinces him to help by appealing to his desire to be a hero once more. Their first order of business: retrieving his lost fishhook from the clutches of a giant, treasure-hoarding crab named Tamatoa in the Realm of Monsters.
The Fiery Twist and a Restored Heart
With Maui's hook recovered, the duo finally confronts the story's main villain: Te Kā, a ferocious demon of earth and fire guarding the way to Te Fiti. In their first battle, Maui's hook is badly damaged, and he abandons a devastated Moana. After a spiritual visit from her grandmother's spirit, Moana finds the courage to face Te Kā alone. As she nears her destination, she has a stunning realization: the island of Te Fiti is gone. She holds up the glowing heart and sees that the fiery demon Te Kā is actually Te Fiti, corrupted and enraged by the loss of her heart. Moana calmly walks up to the lava monster and restores the heart, transforming the raging demon back into the lush, serene goddess of life.
A Hero's Welcome and New Horizons
With the curse lifted, a redeemed Maui bids farewell, and Te Fiti gifts Moana a new boat. She returns to Motunui a hero, having saved her people and rediscovered their identity as voyagers. The film ends with Moana, now chief, leading her people out onto the open ocean. This sets the stage for Moana 2, which sees Moana on a quest to find other island communities. Meanwhile, the live-action remake, set for a July 10, 2026 release, will bring the original story to life with Dwayne Johnson reprising his role as Maui and Catherine Laga'aia as the new Moana.
