An Ending Inspired by 'The Hangover'
Showrunner Prentice Penny revealed that one of the most developed alternate concepts was a full-blown comedic adventure set in Morocco. Instead of the grounded, Los Angeles-based time jumps we saw, the finale would have followed Issa and Molly on a chaotic
bachelorette trip that went completely off the rails. Penny described the unproduced script as being in the vein of "The Hangover" or "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles," with the best friends getting stranded and having to make a frantic journey across the country. The idea even included a run-in with a real-life Rihanna impersonator named Ribabba. The concept stemmed from a Season 2 plotline where Issa and Molly, unable to afford a real trip, created a makeshift Moroccan vacation at home. While the writers found the idea funny, they ultimately decided it strayed too far from the show's spirit. As Penny bluntly put it, "we can't end the show with them on camels."
The Great Debate Over Issa and Lawrence
The central 'will they or won't they' of the series, Issa and Lawrence, was also the subject of intense debate in the writers' room. Issa Rae herself admitted they considered multiple endings for the couple. As the final season progressed, and as Rae embodied the character on set, she found herself feeling that denying Issa a reunion with Lawrence felt like denying her happiness. One of the show's writers, Laura Kittrell, powerfully argued that a previous episode had essentially established them as soulmates, and to keep them apart would betray that core truth. The final decision was to show that happiness is a conscious choice. They let Issa dare to choose it with Lawrence after both characters had the necessary time to grow individually. Lawrence needed to mature into his role as a father, and Issa needed to become secure on her own before they could finally be ready for each other.
Finding the 'Why' in the Writers' Room
Ultimately, the writers scrapped multiple versions of the finale because they felt they were putting too much pressure on creating a perfect, definitive ending. Penny explained that the team had a breakthrough when they shifted their perspective. Instead of trying to "land the plane," they decided to frame the finale as a beginning. The guiding question became: what would be the most interesting starting point for a theoretical Season 6? This mindset led them to the time-jump structure, which was heavily inspired by the classic finale of another HBO hit, "Six Feet Under." It allowed them to show that the characters' lives don't just stop when the credits roll; they continue to evolve, grow, and face new challenges. It was about providing a hopeful ellipsis rather than a hard period.
A Finale True to Los Angeles
While the Morocco idea was exciting, both Rae and Penny felt it was crucial for the series to end where it began: in Los Angeles. The city wasn't just a backdrop for "Insecure"; it was a character in its own right, shaping the protagonists' journeys, struggles, and triumphs. Setting the finale so far from home, even for a wild adventure, ultimately felt wrong. The chosen ending, with its montage of birthdays, weddings, and quiet moments in familiar L.A. spots, paid proper homage to the show's roots. It grounded the characters' growth in the world fans had come to know and love. The heart of the finale remained the beautiful, tearful conversation between Issa and Molly at Molly's wedding, a testament to their enduring friendship which was always the true backbone of the series.
