The Power of Physical Presence
There’s a reason the animatronic T-Rex from 1993's Jurassic Park still feels terrifyingly real: it was actually there. Practical effects—animatronics, miniatures, prosthetics, and in-camera stunts—have a weight and texture that digital creations often
struggle to replicate. They exist in physical space, interacting with real light and casting real shadows. This tangibility tricks our brains less because, on a fundamental level, what we're seeing is real. Think of the grotesque, pulsating creature effects in John Carpenter's The Thing (1982). Over four decades later, they remain viscerally disturbing because they were crafted from latex and rubber, not pixels. This physical reality also grounds the actors. Performers deliver more authentic reactions when they can see, touch, and respond to a tangible object or creature on set, rather than acting opposite a tennis ball on a stick. That authenticity translates directly to the audience, making the impossible feel plausible.
When Pixels Don't Persuade
Digital spectacle, or CGI, offers limitless possibilities. It can build entire worlds, conjure armies, and defy physics. Yet, it has a built-in expiration date. CGI is technology, and technology evolves rapidly. As one analysis puts it, CGI from ten years ago can often look worse than practical effects from 40 years ago. Our eyes become trained to spot digital artifacts, weightlessness, and unnatural physics. Early-2000s blockbusters are littered with examples of rubbery-looking digital characters or glossy textures that immediately pull you out of the film. This is partly because CGI became cheaper and faster, leading to its overuse without the necessary artistry to back it up. Furthermore, actors can struggle to connect with a green-screen void, leading to performances that feel disconnected from the spectacle unfolding around them—a common critique of the Star Wars prequel trilogy, for example.
The Hybrid Sweet Spot
The debate isn't truly about one versus the other. The films with the most enduring spectacle are often those that masterfully blend both techniques. Today's most visionary directors use practical effects as a foundation and enhance them with targeted CGI. George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road is a masterclass in this approach; while it features over 2,000 visual effects shots, its core is built on breathtaking practical stunt work, with real vehicles crashing in the desert. Similarly, Denis Villeneuve's Dune uses immense, physically built sets to give the world of Arrakis its scale, then uses CGI to extend those environments and add elements like the iconic sandworms. Jurassic Park itself is a perfect early example, using practical animatronics for close-ups and groundbreaking CGI for wider, more dynamic shots. This hybrid method provides the tactile realism of practical work with the expansive freedom of digital, creating a seamless and believable whole.
Spectacle Is Nothing Without Story
Ultimately, the tool doesn't matter as much as the artist wielding it. An effect, whether practical or digital, that exists purely for its own sake will always feel hollow and age poorly. The reason the original Star Wars holds up isn't just because of its charming miniatures and model work; it's because those effects served a timeless story of heroism and adventure. Christopher Nolan is famous for his dedication to practical effects, like flipping a real semi-truck in The Dark Knight or building a rotating hallway for Inception, because he believes it creates a more visceral, grounded experience for the audience. The spectacle is in service of the feeling, not the other way around. A film with a weak script and flat characters can't be saved by dazzling effects, no matter how they're achieved. The magic that lasts is the one that connects on a human level.
