The Unwilling Prince
First, rewind to Season 1. Aegon Targaryen is introduced not as a contender, but as a royal nuisance. He’s a hedonistic prince with no desire for the Iron Throne, a fact he makes painfully clear to his mother, Queen Alicent. He scoffs at his betrothal
to his sister Helaena and is more at home in the Street of Silk than the Red Keep. His mother's insistence that he is a challenge to Rhaenyra's claim is a warning he barely registers. This phase is crucial for understanding his initial reluctance; he never wanted the power his family thrust upon him. His defining trait is avoidance, a stark contrast to the king he is forced to become.
The Coronation and the Choice
The turning point for Aegon is Season 1, Episode 9, "The Green Council." Following King Viserys's death, Aegon is hidden, then hunted, and ultimately dragged to his own coronation. In a moment of genuine panic, he tells his mother he's not suited to rule and plans to flee. But when he stands before the masses in the Dragonpit, wearing the Conqueror's crown, something shifts. The roar of the crowd awakens a flicker of pride and ambition he never knew he had. That feeling is immediately checked when Rhaenys Targaryen bursts through the floor on her dragon, Meleys, giving him—and the audience—a terrifying preview of the war to come.
The Burdens of a Boy King
Season 2 opens with Aegon struggling under the weight of the crown he now possesses. He is reactive and petulant, lashing out in grief and anger after the murder of his son, Jaehaerys. He tries to assert his authority, demanding action and dismissing his grandfather, Otto Hightower, as Hand of the King in favor of the more aggressive Ser Criston Cole. Yet, he remains a pawn in the games of more experienced players. He is easily manipulated by those on his council and his brother, Aemond, whose ambition and control of the massive dragon Vhagar make him a constant, looming threat. This period shows a king in name, but not yet in power.
Trial by (Dragon) Fire
Aegon's arc takes its most dramatic and brutal turn at the Battle at Rook's Rest. Feeling undermined by his council, a drunken Aegon impulsively flies his dragon, Sunfyre, into what he believes is a simple siege. Instead, he finds himself in a deadly two-on-one dragon battle against Rhaenys and Meleys, soon joined by Aemond and Vhagar. In the ensuing chaos, Aegon and Sunfyre are catastrophically wounded, not just by the enemy but seemingly by Aemond's own dragonfire. This battle marks the end of Aegon the boy. He survives, but is left physically broken, his armor melted into his skin, and his reign effectively handed over to Aemond.
The King in Hiding
The final phase of Aegon's journey so far sees him as a broken man, both physically and politically. Bedridden and in agony, he watches as his brother Aemond consolidates power. His only true confidant becomes Larys Strong, who sees the wounded king as his path to ultimate influence. In the Season 2 finale, convinced his life is in danger from all sides—including his own family—Aegon agrees to flee King's Landing with Larys. He escapes the capital not as a king, but as a fugitive, hidden away while his rivals prepare to battle for his throne. This is Aegon at his lowest point, a defeated ruler forced into exile, but one whose story is clearly far from over.
