The Dreaded Conga Line
For guests, the single-file shuffle through a haunted house is a major immersion-breaker. When you’re packed shoulder-to-shoulder, the jump scare meant for the person in front of you becomes a predictable gag by the time it reaches you. The atmosphere
evaporates, replaced by the frustration of seeing the magic trick before the reveal. But for the designers at Universal's Halloween Horror Nights, that line of people—and the speed at which it moves—is a fundamental element of the show they have to design around. It's not just a crowd-flow problem; it's a creative puzzle that dictates how, when, and how effectively they can scare you.
The Anatomy of a Scare
A great scare is a piece of micro-theater. It has a setup, a distraction, and a precisely timed payoff. According to HHN Creative Director John Murdy, a scare actor has about ten seconds to reset and perform their scare for the next group of guests. This tiny window is the entire show. If a group walks too fast, they collide with the group ahead. Too slow, and they cause a backup, forcing the scare actor to rush or abandon their performance cycle. This creates a dead zone where nothing happens. Designers, therefore, become masters of timing, studying how to play the angles of a guest's peripheral vision and using sound and light to direct attention. They build mazes knowing that the effectiveness of every startling moment depends entirely on a guest arriving at a specific spot at a specific second. When the conga line disrupts this, it dismantles the carefully constructed rhythm of fear.
Pacing as Storytelling
Beyond individual scares, walking speed dictates the narrative flow of the entire maze. Just like a film, a good haunted house has a deliberate pace. Some mazes are designed as a "slow burn," building psychological terror with subtle details and atmosphere before ramping up the intensity. Others are frantic, meant to feel like a chase from beginning to end. Designers use hallway length, room size, and visual cues to subconsciously influence how fast people move. A long, dark, narrow corridor naturally slows people down, heightening suspense. A wider room with a clear exit path encourages a quicker pace. This manipulation of speed is a core part of the storytelling. If guests rush through a slow-burn scene, the intended emotional arc is lost. The house becomes a disjointed series of sets rather than a cohesive, terrifying journey.
The Art of the 'Pulse'
So, how do designers combat the conga line? The primary tool is a technique called “pulsing.” Instead of allowing a continuous stream of people, attendants at the front of the maze intentionally hold guests and release them in small, spaced-out groups. This manufactured gap is the creative team's best defense, giving each group a chance to experience the maze as intended and allowing scare actors the crucial time needed to reset. Inside the maze, designers build in subtle “decompression zones” or transitional hallways that give guests a moment of relief and help naturally re-establish spacing if groups start to cluster. Some designers even try to “scare forward,” designing scares that encourage guests to move ahead, keeping the flow going rather than causing them to jump backward and stop traffic. It’s a delicate balance between maximizing the number of guests who can experience the house (throughput) and preserving the quality of the show for each person.
