Remember back in Season 2 when Prince Jacaerys Velaryon, facing a deficit of dragonriders for the Blacks, made a desperate call? He offered lands and titles to anyone with Valyrian blood who could claim one of the riderless dragons on Dragonstone. These
recruits, known as "Dragonseeds," are the bastard or lowborn descendants of Targaryens and Velaryons. They represent a massive shift in power, giving Queen Rhaenyra more aerial firepower but also introducing a dangerous element of instability into her ranks. They are the nuclear option, and the fallout is about to be spectacular.
Hugh Hammer: The Ambitious Blacksmith
Portrayed by Kieran Bew, Hugh the Hammer is a blacksmith's bastard who possesses the raw strength and ambition that makes him a formidable, if untrustworthy, ally. Initially seen petitioning King Aegon's court for better pay, he later answered Jace's call and successfully claimed Vermithor, the colossal dragon once ridden by King Jaehaerys I. This instantly made him one of the most powerful players in the war. Rewatch his tense introduction in King's Landing in Season 2 and his claiming of the Bronze Fury on Dragonstone. His discontent with the rewards offered by Rhaenyra, combined with a prophecy he believes applies to him, makes him a character whose loyalty is very much in question heading into the finale.
Ulf the White: The Unpredictable Drunkard
Tom Bennett plays Ulf the White, a drunken, cynical man-at-arms who claims to be a bastard son of Prince Baelon Targaryen. Despite his abrasive personality, he proved his Valyrian heritage by bonding with Silverwing, the dragon of the beloved Queen Alysanne. Ulf is the definition of a loose cannon. He fights for the Blacks but chafes at the authority of the nobles he now serves alongside. His key moments include his boastful introduction in a tavern and his surprisingly successful taming of Silverwing. Showrunner Ryan Condal compared Ulf on a dragon to a man riding a nuclear bomb, which tells you everything you need to know about the chaos he brings to the battlefield.
Addam of Hull: The Loyal Shipwright
Played by Clinton Liberty, Addam of Hull is in a different category from his fellow Dragonseeds. Confirmed as a bastard son of Lord Corlys Velaryon, Addam is driven by a desire for honor and to prove his loyalty to the houses that lifted him up. His most memorable sequence is the masterful chase scene where Seasmoke, the former dragon of Laenor Velaryon, playfully hunts him down before accepting him as a rider. This bond is crucial, as is Lord Corlys's decision to petition Rhaenyra to legitimize Addam and name him heir to Driftmark. Rewatching Addam's journey is key to understanding the themes of loyalty versus ambition that define the Dragonseed subplot.
The Nettles Question: A Storyline Reimagined
Book readers will know a fourth major Dragonseed: a young woman named Nettles who tamed the wild dragon Sheepstealer. The show made a significant change by cutting Nettles and merging her story with that of Rhaena Targaryen. In Season 3, it was Rhaena who bonded with the wild dragon, but her lack of control led to disaster at the Battle of the Gullet, indirectly causing the death of Prince Jacaerys. This tragic twist has fueled Rhaenyra's paranoia and created a deep rift within her own family. While not a traditional Dragonseed, Rhaena's journey with Sheepstealer is a vital, albeit controversial, part of this saga that will surely have consequences in the finale.
