A Radical Vision is Born
The story began not in a studio, but as a webcomic started in 2012 by a young art student, ND Stevenson. Nimona was a punky, funny, and deeply emotional tale set in a futuristic medieval world. It followed a chaotic, gender-nonconforming shapeshifter
who teams up with a disgraced knight, Ballister Blackheart, to expose a corrupt institution. The webcomic, which later became an award-winning graphic novel, was celebrated for its subversion of fantasy tropes and its powerful, queer-coded themes of identity and acceptance. When Blue Sky Studios, the animation house behind the Ice Age franchise, acquired the rights, the goal was to translate that radical spirit to the screen, with Stevenson involved in the process.
When the Mouse Came to Town
Production was well underway when Disney acquired 20th Century Fox, and with it, Blue Sky Studios. Almost immediately, the creative team behind Nimona felt a shift. According to former staffers, the new Disney leadership grew uncomfortable with the film's overt LGBTQ+ themes. A central part of the story is the romantic relationship between the knight Ballister Blackheart and his rival, Ambrosius Goldenloin. An explicit same-sex kiss and an "I love you" scene were integral to their arc. Reports from anonymous Blue Sky employees revealed that there was significant pushback from Disney executives on these elements. The pressure was so intense that the creative team reportedly began leaving the kiss out of presentations to leadership, though they intended to keep it in the final film.
Pulling the Plug
The tension culminated in February 2021 when Disney announced it was shutting down Blue Sky Studios entirely, citing economic reasons related to the pandemic. With the studio's closure, its flagship project, Nimona, was officially canceled. At the time of its cancellation, the film was reportedly 75% complete. To the creative team and fans, it was a devastating blow. A nearly finished film, one that promised groundbreaking representation in mainstream animation, was effectively erased. The story of a character who fights against being controlled and silenced by an institution was, in a painfully ironic twist, silenced by a corporate institution. For over a year, the film was considered dead, a casualty of a merger and a victim of creative censorship.
A Second Life, Uncompromised
Just when all hope seemed lost, a hero emerged. In April 2022, it was announced that Annapurna Pictures had rescued the project, with Netflix set to distribute it. Most of the core creative team was brought back, and DNEG Animation took over to finish the film. Free from the previous corporate oversight, the filmmakers were able to restore and fully realize the story's original vision. The same-sex kiss and the core queer relationship were no longer points of contention but were central to the film's emotional climax. When Nimona finally premiered on Netflix in 2023, it was met with critical acclaim for its heart, humor, and fearless celebration of its themes, ultimately earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature.
