Astrophage: The Star-Eating Microbe
In the book, Astrophage are tiny organisms that consume stellar energy, dimming our sun and threatening an ice age. These microbes can store energy by converting it directly into mass (a nod to E=mc²) and use it for propulsion. The reality is more complicated.
While we know of extremophile microbes on Earth that thrive in harsh conditions like deep-sea vents or volcanic hot springs, nothing comes close to surviving on a star's surface. The concept of a microbe converting energy to mass with perfect efficiency is, for now, pure science fiction. However, MSU astrobiologist Matt Schrenk notes the core idea—that alien life would likely be microbial—is spot on.
The Spin Drive: A Light-Powered Engine
The Hail Mary spacecraft travels at incredible speeds using 'spin drives.' These engines use light to attract Astrophage to a rotating mechanism, trigger them to release their stored energy as infrared light, and use the momentum of that light to generate thrust. In principle, this is based on a real concept called a photon drive. Light does have momentum and can create a tiny amount of push. The problem is scale. The amount of energy needed to propel a massive ship to relativistic speeds would be astronomical, likely generating heat intense enough to melt any known material, a point some physicists have raised. So, while the idea of a light-powered engine has roots in real physics, the spin drive's incredible efficiency is a convenient fictional leap.
Rocky and the Eridians: Alien Biology
One of the book’s most beloved characters is Rocky, a spider-like engineer from the planet Erid. Weir imagines Eridians as having evolved on a high-gravity, high-pressure world with an ammonia atmosphere and no light. This explains Rocky’s tough, metal-infused exoskeleton, echolocation-based 'sight,' and unique biochemistry. While no such creature is known to exist, Weir built the concept from the ground up based on the (since-disproven) real exoplanet 40 Eridani A b. Weir’s detailed thought experiment on how life might evolve under different environmental constraints is a masterclass in speculative biology. While some scientists quibble with details, like whether a dense ammonia atmosphere would truly be pitch black, the rigorous approach is widely praised.
Taumoeba: The Astrophage Predator
The solution to Earth's Astrophage problem is another microbe, the Taumoeba, which preys on Astrophage in the Tau Ceti system. Protagonist Ryland Grace must use 'directed evolution' to adapt the Taumoeba to survive in our solar system. Directed evolution is a real and powerful laboratory technique where scientists accelerate evolution by applying selective pressures, forcing organisms to adapt over many quick generations. However, some biologists have pointed out that adapting an organism from an ammonia-based, high-temperature environment to a water-based one would be an immense challenge, requiring changes to nearly every protein and biological process, likely far beyond what could be achieved in a short time. Furthermore, the idea that Grace could then simply eat the Taumoeba for survival is also a stretch, as alien biochemistry would not necessarily be non-toxic or even digestible for humans.
