The Art of the Lie
An unreliable narrator is a character who tells the story but whose credibility is compromised. This isn't just about a character who lies; their entire perception of reality might be skewed by delusion, amnesia, bias, or a deliberate agenda to mislead.
The narrator might be a con man spinning a yarn, like Verbal Kint in The Usual Suspects, or someone whose mental state fractures their reality, like the protagonist in Fight Club who is unaware he has a dissociative identity disorder. The reasons are varied: they might be a bragger, a clown, a naive observer, or someone hiding their own guilt. The audience is put in the position of a detective, forced to actively piece together clues and question what is presented as fact. This turns passive viewing into an immersive game.
An Unspoken Contract with the Audience
So, what separates a satisfying twist from one that feels like a betrayal? It comes down to a kind of unspoken agreement. The audience agrees to be misled, but they expect the film to play fair. A movie that cheats simply withholds crucial information for the sake of a last-minute shock. A film that plays fair, however, scatters breadcrumbs throughout the narrative. The clues are there, even if they only make sense in hindsight. Think of The Sixth Sense: once you know the twist, you can re-watch the film and see that Dr. Malcolm Crowe never directly interacts with anyone but the boy, Cole. The deception feels controlled and intentional. The story doesn't just lie; it provides a consistent, if flawed, version of events that holds together emotionally and logically, inviting the viewer to sense the truth underneath.
Masters of Misdirection
David Fincher is a modern master of this technique. In Gone Girl, he presents not one but two unreliable narrators. The story shifts between the perspectives of Nick, whose narration is compromised by his secrets, and his wife Amy, who is actively fabricating a story through her diary to frame him. The film makes the audience constantly switch allegiances, unsure of who is telling the greater lie. Another classic example is Akira Kurosawa’s Rashomon, which presents four contradictory accounts of the same crime, questioning the very nature of objective truth. More recently, films like Joker use the protagonist's delusions—such as an entirely imagined romantic relationship—to make the audience question the reality of everything they are seeing.
When the Twist Feels Like a Betrayal
The device fails when a story's inconsistencies feel random rather than deliberate. If the twist relies on information that was impossible for the viewer to have known or inferred, the audience feels manipulated, not surprised. The goal is an “aha!” moment, not a “huh?” moment. The unreliability must serve a purpose beyond the shock itself, often revealing a deeper theme about memory, trauma, or the character's psychology. For instance, in Atonement, the narrator Briony Tallis reveals at the end that she has altered the story out of guilt for a lie she told as a child, using her narration to create a happier ending for the lovers whose lives she ruined. Her unreliability isn't a trick; it's the entire point of the story—a poignant exploration of guilt and the power of storytelling to reshape the past, even if only on the page.
