Welcome to the age of “art-horror,” a brand of filmmaking that is often visually stunning, emotionally complex, and thematically dense. Sometimes called “elevated horror,” these films—think of modern classics like The Witch, Hereditary, or Midsommar—often
trade jump scares for a slow-burn sense of dread. They are layered with meaning, historical references, and intricate symbolism. And almost immediately after their release, the internet explodes with video essays and thousand-word Reddit threads aiming to “explain” what it all really meant. This can create a daunting viewing experience, turning what should be a thrilling two hours into what feels like a homework assignment you’re destined to fail. The pressure to not just watch, but to understand, can suck the joy out of the experience, leaving you feeling like you missed the point if you didn't catch the meaning of every rune or tapestry.
Permission to Just Feel Scared
Here’s a radical idea for this Halloween season: you don’t have to “get” it. At least, not in the academic sense. Art-horror is designed to be felt as much as it is to be understood. Directors like Ari Aster and Robert Eggers are masters of atmosphere. They use sound design, cinematography, and unsettling performances to create a visceral reaction. The suffocating quiet of the farmhouse in The Witch, the disorienting, sun-drenched brightness of Midsommar, or the oppressive darkness in The Babadook are all crafted to get under your skin, not to be solved like a puzzle. The true horror in these films often lies in the mood they create. It’s the feeling of watching a family unravel, the anxiety of being an outsider in a strange place, or the creeping realization that something is deeply, fundamentally wrong. That is the primary text. Everything else is commentary.
Symbolism Is Texture, Not a Test
This isn't to say that symbolism in these films is meaningless. It’s absolutely intentional and adds incredible depth for those who enjoy digging into it. The intricate pagan and folkloric details in Midsommar or The Witch are based on extensive research and enrich the story. But you don't need a degree in folklore to feel the menace of Black Phillip the goat or the eerie perfection of the Hårga cult's embroidered clothing. Think of symbolism as the texture of the film, not a secret code you have to crack to unlock the ending. A triangular building is inherently unsettling on a visual level before you ever get to its historical meaning in witchcraft or alchemy. The symbol serves the feeling, not the other way around. Its purpose is to deepen the emotional and sensory experience, and you can have that experience without a complete analytical breakdown.
Your Interpretation Is the Right One
The most rewarding part of watching any great film is what it makes you think and feel personally. The beauty of art-horror is that it often leaves space for individual interpretation. Was the ending of Hereditary a literal supernatural event, or a metaphor for the inescapable nature of family trauma? The answer can be both. These films often explore universal themes like grief, social isolation, and loss of faith. How you connect with those themes is a valid and essential part of the artistic exchange.
