Arrival and Acclimation
Your hammam experience begins the moment you enter. You'll be shown to a changing room and given a locker for your belongings. Here, you'll trade your clothes for a peştemal, a traditional cotton wrap, and a pair of slippers. Modesty levels are a personal
choice; while some embrace going nude under the wrap, wearing a swimsuit is perfectly acceptable. You will then be guided into the sıcaklık, or warm room. The goal here is to relax for 10-15 minutes, allowing the gentle heat and humidity to slowly raise your body temperature, open your pores, and prepare your skin for what's to come.
The Central Marble Stone
Next, you'll enter the heart of the hammam: the hararet, or hot room. This chamber is architecturally stunning, often domed and clad entirely in marble. In the center lies the göbek taşı, a large, heated marble slab. You will be asked to lie down on this warm stone, which radiates a deep, penetrating heat that soothes muscles and encourages a detoxifying sweat. The combination of the steam-filled air and the direct heat from the stone is intensely relaxing, melting away tension as you wait for your attendant.
The Vigorous Kese Scrub
Once your body is fully warmed and your skin is soft, the main event begins. An attendant, known as a tellak for men or natır for women, will approach. Using a coarse mitt called a kese, they will begin to vigorously scrub your entire body. This is not a gentle exfoliation; the friction is intense by design. You will likely see rolls of dead skin sloughing away, which is a normal and satisfying sign that the treatment is working. This process removes impurities and leaves your skin feeling exceptionally smooth and renewed.
The Cloud of Foam
Following the intense scrub, your attendant will rinse you with bowls of warm water. Then comes the most theatrical and blissful part of the ritual: the köpük masajı, or foam massage. The attendant dips a large cloth pouch into soapy water and, by whipping it through the air, creates a massive cloud of fragrant, bubbly suds. This mountain of foam is then slid over your body, followed by a gentle, slippery massage. It's a deeply cleansing and soothing sensation that contrasts beautifully with the roughness of the preceding scrub, leaving your freshly exfoliated skin feeling soft and pampered.
Rinsing and Final Relaxation
After the foam massage, your attendant will give you a final rinse with alternating bowls of warm and sometimes cool water to close the pores. You will then be guided out of the hot room to the soğukluk, or cool room. Here, you'll be given fresh, dry towels. This is a space to recline, cool down, and slowly readjust to normal temperatures. You'll often be offered a glass of Turkish tea (çay) or sherbet to help you rehydrate. Don’t rush this part; the post-hammam relaxation is a crucial element of the entire experience, allowing your body and mind to fully absorb the benefits of the ritual.
