Beyond the main performances, there are some major awards to keep an eye on. Grunge pioneers Nirvana will be honored with the prestigious Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. In a new category, Taylor Swift will receive the inaugural MTV VMA Artist Director Honors. Swift, who has nine nominations, is also poised to make history; she and Beyoncé are currently tied for career VMA wins, and a single victory would push her into the lead. The music video for her new single "Patient Zero" is also set to premiere during the show, adding another layer of intrigue.
