For years, Copenhagen has been more than just a city; it's been a benchmark for what fashion could be. Spearheaded by Copenhagen Fashion Week (CPHFW), brands wanting to show on the official schedule must meet a stringent set of minimum sustainability
standards. These aren't just suggestions. The framework, first introduced in 2020 and made mandatory in 2023, covers the entire value chain, from materials and production to working conditions and show logistics. Brands are required to do things like ensure at least 60% of their collection is made from certified, preferred, or upcycled materials, ban the destruction of unsold clothes, and eliminate single-use plastics. This ecosystem fostered brands like Ganni and Cecilie Bahnsen, which built their identities on a foundation of not just aesthetics, but of responsibility. Their success proved that eco-consciousness could be a core tenet, not just a marketing footnote.
The Scaling Dilemma
The problem with being a successful niche brand is that you don't stay niche for long. As these Copenhagen brands gained international acclaim, the pressure to scale production intensified. This is where the responsible-fashion model faces its greatest test. Mass production is historically built on principles that are the antithesis of sustainability: speed, low costs, and high volume. Scaling up requires a consistent and massive supply of materials, something that can be difficult for specialized eco-friendly fabrics. It also means expanding supply chains, making it harder to maintain strict oversight on ethical labor practices and factory conditions far from home. The temptation to cut corners for the sake of growth is immense, and it poses an existential question: can a brand become a global giant without losing the very soul that made it special?
The Material and Supply Chain Maze
At the heart of the scaling challenge are materials and labor. Sustainable fabrics like organic cotton, recycled polyester, or innovative textiles are often more expensive and have a limited supply compared to their conventional counterparts. When a brand needs to produce tens of thousands of units instead of a few thousand, securing that much GOTS-certified cotton or recycled nylon becomes a major logistical and financial hurdle. Furthermore, ensuring ethical production becomes exponentially more complex. A brand might have a personal relationship with a small, family-owned factory in Europe, but when it needs to add multiple larger facilities in Asia to meet demand, enforcing fair wage and safety standards requires significant investment in audits and transparency systems. There is a real risk of a brand's commitment to sustainability being diluted as the supply chain grows longer and more opaque.
Redefining Growth Itself
In response to these challenges, leading Copenhagen brands are attempting to write a new playbook for growth. Rather than simply applying the old model, they are innovating. Ganni, for example, achieved B Corp certification and committed to a 50% carbon reduction by 2027, even as it expands globally. The brand openly reports its progress and admits its imperfections, using transparency as a tool for accountability. Designer Cecilie Bahnsen has taken a different approach, focusing on timelessness and craftsmanship to counteract the trend cycle. By creating two main collections a year instead of multiple drops, the brand encourages consumers to buy less and cherish more, embedding sustainability into the very use-case of the garment. These strategies suggest a new definition of success—one where growth is measured not just by revenue, but by the ability to maintain integrity and positively influence the industry.
