Both wool and synthetic fleece are excellent insulators designed to trap body heat. In dry conditions, it's a close race, with many finding high-quality wool slightly warmer than a comparable fleece. The real difference emerges when moisture enters the picture.
Wool has a remarkable ability to absorb up to 30-35% of its own weight in water without feeling wet to the touch, and it continues to provide insulation even when saturated. This makes it a safer choice in unpredictable, damp conditions. Fleece, on the other hand, absorbs very little water and loses more of its insulating power when it gets wet. If you’re caught in a drizzle, a wool sweater will keep you warmer for longer than a fleece one.
Handling the Elements: Moisture-Wicking and Drying Speed
While wool insulates better when wet, fleece is the undisputed champion of drying quickly. Because its synthetic fibers absorb almost no water, fleece wicks moisture away from your skin and dries at a lightning-fast pace. This makes it ideal for high-intensity activities where you're sweating heavily, as it can pull moisture off your body and dry out before you get chilled. Wool is also a great moisture-wicker, pulling sweat away from the skin effectively. However, once it has absorbed that moisture into its core, it takes significantly longer to dry out compared to fleece. For activities with rapid cycles of sweat and rest, fleece's quick-drying nature is a major advantage.
On the Move: Pack Space and Weight
For backpackers, travelers, and anyone conscious of bulk, pack space is a critical consideration. Here, fleece generally has the edge. It is typically lighter and more compressible than wool of a similar thickness. You can stuff a fleece jacket into a corner of your backpack with relative ease. Wool, while available in lightweight forms like merino, tends to be heavier and less packable overall. A thick wool sweater simply takes up more space and adds more weight to your load than its fleece equivalent, a key factor for long-distance treks or minimalist travel.
The Unseen Variables: Dust, Odor, and Comfort
This is where wool truly shines, particularly on multi-day trips. Wool is naturally antimicrobial, meaning it can be worn for days without developing the unpleasant odors that plague synthetic fabrics. Fleece, made from polyester, is a welcoming environment for odor-causing bacteria and can start to smell after just one sweaty workout. Regarding dust and allergens, wool’s moisture-regulating properties create a drier environment that is less hospitable to dust mites, which thrive in the humidity often trapped by synthetic bedding and clothing. While some find traditional wool itchy, modern merino wool is made from incredibly fine fibers that are soft and comfortable against the skin. Fleece is almost universally soft from the start, but its tendency to hold odor is a significant drawback for many.
Long-Term Value: Durability, Cost, and Sustainability
Fleece is typically the more affordable option, making it an accessible choice for many. It's also very durable and easy to care for, though it can be prone to pilling over time. Wool often comes with a higher price tag, but it’s a long-lasting investment. From a sustainability perspective, the choice is complex. Wool is a natural, renewable, and biodegradable fiber. Fleece, however, is a synthetic fabric made from petroleum, a non-renewable resource. On the other hand, many fleece products are now made from recycled plastic bottles, and the fabric itself can often be recycled. A major environmental concern with fleece is that it sheds microplastic fibers with every wash, contributing to water pollution.
