1. The Fearless Leader
You know this person. They’ve studied the park map, memorized the locations of the Ozzy Osbourne and Stranger Things 5 houses, and probably watched video walkthroughs. They are the first to enter every maze, unflinching and stoic. Their job is to set
the pace, absorb the initial jump scare, and declare, “Alright, it’s not that bad,” while the rest of you are still recovering. They are the rock, the anchor, and the reason your group doesn’t spend 45 minutes debating whether to enter the 'Killer Klowns from Outer Space' house. Their bravery is both inspiring and deeply suspicious. Are they truly unafraid, or just better at hiding it? No one knows, but without them, the group would collapse into a quivering mass at the park entrance.
2. The Human Shield (aka The Sacrificial Lamb)
This person did not want to come. They were bribed, cajoled, or simply fell victim to peer pressure. Their primary role is to be physically held, pushed, and maneuvered by others to absorb scares. They walk with their face buried in the Leader’s back, hands gripping a friend’s hoodie so tightly it might rip. Every lunge from a scareactor, every blast of an air cannon, is met with a high-pitched yelp that fuels the rest of the group. They are often found in the middle of the conga line, the most vulnerable position, serving as a buffer for everyone else. While they may claim to hate every second, their terrified reactions are, frankly, a core part of the entertainment for everyone else.
3. The Jumpscare Analyst
This friend appreciates the craft of the scare. After a creature with a chainsaw lunges from the fog, they aren't screaming; they're critiquing. “Oh, good use of misdirection there,” they’ll say, completely deadpan. They point out the hidden corners where scareactors are likely hiding and admire the thematic consistency of the 'KILLceañera' house. They might even try to compliment the actors on their performance, much to the horror of everyone else. While their commentary can sometimes break the immersion, they are also invaluable. They’re the ones who notice the cool details in the 'Hellraiser' maze that you missed while you were shielding your eyes. They provide a necessary dose of detached calm amidst the chaos.
4. The Screamer
There are two types of Screamers: those who love it and those who hate it. This entry is about the one who loves it. The Screamer is pure, unadulterated energy. They scream at everything—the major scares, the minor scares, a stray piece of fog, their own reflection. Their screams are not of terror, but of exhilaration. They are having the absolute time of their life and expressing it at a volume that could shatter glass. They often laugh immediately after screaming, creating a bizarre and infectious sound of horrified joy. They are the lifeblood of the event, the perfect audience member, and a walking, shrieking endorsement for why HHN is so much fun.
5. The Over-It Skeptic
“This isn’t even scary.” “It’s just a guy in a mask.” “I saw his sneakers.” The Skeptic, or Naysayer, walks through every meticulously designed house with an air of unimpressed superiority. They are on a mission to prove they are above it all. Ironically, this makes them a prime target for scareactors, who love nothing more than the challenge of breaking a tough exterior. The greatest moment of any HHN trip is witnessing the Skeptic finally, and spectacularly, get got. The brief flash of genuine terror in their eyes before they try to play it off is worth the price of admission alone. They are a necessary villain, providing a challenge that makes the scares feel earned.
6. The Documentarian
Is it even a friend group outing if it isn't documented for social media? The Documentarian experiences the entire event through their phone screen. They’re recording videos in the scare zones (despite the darkness), taking group selfies in front of the 'Infernal Carnival of Nightmares' entrance, and providing a running commentary for their followers. While this can be annoying, their efforts are appreciated the next day when you have a library of hilarious photos and videos of everyone losing their minds. They are the designated memory-keeper, sacrificing their own in-the-moment experience so that the group’s collective terror can live on forever online.
7. The Runner
When the fight-or-flight instinct kicks in, The Runner chooses flight. Every single time. A scareactor lunges, and they are gone, abandoning the group without a second thought. You’ll often find them waiting 50 feet past the exit of a scare zone, breathing heavily and looking betrayed that you didn’t keep up. Their self-preservation is both comical and slightly insulting. In a haunted house, they will plow through the entire group, pushing past friends and strangers alike to escape whatever horror lies ahead. They aren't a team player, but they provide a valuable lesson: in the face of true terror, it’s every person for themself.
