Raya and the Last Dragon
The comparisons between Disney's 'Raya and the Last Dragon' and 'Avatar' began as soon as the first trailers dropped. It’s easy to see why: both stories feature a determined female protagonist from a fractured
land on a quest to restore balance. The world of Kumandra is split into five distinct regions, reminiscent of ATLA's four nations. Raya, much like Katara or Korra, is a warrior tasked with uniting her people against a common enemy. The producer of 'Raya' welcomed the comparisons, noting that both projects pay homage to Southeast Asian cultures, which naturally leads to some overlap in aesthetics and themes. Add in a magical, mythical creature as a key companion and a world filled with unique hybrid animals, and the parallels become impossible to ignore.
The Dragon Prince
This one is practically a spiritual successor, and for good reason: its co-creator, Aaron Ehasz, was the head writer for 'Avatar: The Last Airbender'. 'The Dragon Prince' feels familiar in the best way possible. It centers on a trio of young heroes—two princes and an elven assassin—on a quest to prevent a massive war, carrying a precious dragon egg that could unite their worlds. The dynamic between the human and magical lands mirrors the elemental nations' conflicts. More pointedly, the series features complex characters, including a rival with a compelling redemption arc that strongly echoes Prince Zuko's journey. Even the voice cast has a direct link, with Jack De Sena, who voiced Sokka, playing the lead role of Callum.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
While a Marvel blockbuster might seem like an odd comparison, the connections are rooted in martial arts and mysticism. The bending in 'Avatar' is famously based on real Chinese martial arts styles, and 'Shang-Chi' brought those same principles to the forefront of the MCU. Critics and fans immediately noted how the fluid, element-like power of the Ten Rings and the wind manipulation seen in the village of Ta Lo felt like a live-action version of bending. The film's themes of family legacy, generational trauma, and a hero choosing his own destiny over the one his powerful father laid out for him also share a deep thematic resonance with the struggles of characters like Aang and Zuko.
How to Train Your Dragon
At its heart, 'Avatar' is a story about ending a century-long war through understanding and empathy, rather than pure aggression. This is the central pillar it shares with the 'How to Train Your Dragon' franchise. The protagonist, Hiccup, is a young man who rejects his society's violent traditions of fighting dragons. Instead, he befriends one, seeking to bridge the gap between two warring species. This journey of challenging inherited prejudice to build a more peaceful world is the same path Aang walks. Both stories masterfully explore the idea that true strength lies in compassion and the courage to choose peace when everyone else is calling for war. The breathtaking flying sequences in both franchises also create a similar sense of awe and adventure.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
This comparison is less about elemental magic and more about storytelling innovation and character arcs. 'Avatar' was groundbreaking for American animation, blending anime-inspired visuals with mature, long-form storytelling. 'Into the Spider-Verse' similarly pushed the boundaries of the medium with its revolutionary art style. Thematically, Miles Morales's journey mirrors Aang's. He is a young, reluctant hero who has immense power thrust upon him and must learn to master it under the guidance of older, jaded mentors. The weight of a great legacy—being the next Spider-Man or the next Avatar—is a heavy burden, and both stories beautifully capture the fear, self-doubt, and ultimate triumph of a kid rising to meet an impossible challenge.
