Know the Room-Clear Rules
Before you do anything, understand how your panel’s room operates. At NYCC, the two largest venues, the Main Stage and the Empire Stage, typically require advance reservations and are completely cleared
after every single panel. If you're in one of these, your decision is made for you; you have to leave. However, most of the smaller panel rooms are not cleared between sessions. This means if you get a seat, you can theoretically stay all day. This is where the tough choices happen. Knowing you can stay makes deciding to leave much harder, which is why a plan is crucial.
Make a Tiered Battle Plan
Success at NYCC starts before you even enter the Javits Center. When the schedule is released, don't just circle what looks interesting; rank your priorities. Sort your desired panels into three tiers. Tier A is your absolute, can't-miss, 'the-reason-I-bought-this-badge' event. Tier B is the 'I'd really love to see this' list. Tier C is for 'this looks cool if I'm nearby and have time.' Your entire day should be built around getting to your Tier A panel. This means you should never let a Tier B or C panel, no matter how good it is, jeopardize your spot for the main event. If a fun but non-essential panel is running long, and your top priority is next, it's a no-brainer. You leave.
Use the 15-Minute Gut Check
You settled into a Tier C panel to kill time, but now you're wondering if it's worth it. Give it 15 minutes. Most panels—after the initial introductions and pleasantries—reveal their core energy and direction within the first quarter-hour. Is the moderator asking sharp questions? Is the talent engaged and sharing new stories, or are they giving canned answers you've heard on a podcast? If the vibe feels low-energy or the topic isn't grabbing you, that's your sign. Your time is the most valuable currency you have at a con. Don't be afraid to cut your losses early and move on.
The Q&A Is Your Exit Ramp
The audience Q&A portion of a panel is a gamble. It can sometimes unearth hilarious anecdotes or genuinely emotional moments. More often, it's a mixed bag of awkward questions, rambling statements, and inside jokes you aren't in on. This makes it the perfect, socially acceptable window to make your escape. Slipping out as attendees begin lining up at the microphones is far less disruptive than leaving mid-discussion. If you're on the fence about staying, let the start of the Q&A be your cue. You can duck out gracefully and get a head start on the human traffic jam that will soon flood the hallways.
Respect the Javits Center Journey
The Javits Center is massive, and underestimating travel time is a rookie mistake. Moving from a panel on Level 1 to one in the new expansion, or from the Main Stage to the depths of Artist Alley, can easily take 15-20 minutes, especially through thick crowds. Check your map. If your next must-see panel is on the other side of the building, leaving when your current panel ends means you're already late. You need to build in a significant buffer. For a Tier A panel, that might mean leaving your previous engagement 30 minutes before it ends just to secure a decent spot in the next line.
When 'Camping' Makes Sense
For the smaller rooms that don't clear out, sometimes the best strategy is to get in and stay put. If two or three of your desired panels (even if they're a mix of Tier B and C) are happening back-to-back in the same room, it's often smarter to sit through the one you're less interested in to guarantee your seat for the ones you truly want to see. This 'panel camping' strategy saves you the stress of navigating hallways and risking a full room. Bring a snack, stay hydrated, and you might even discover a new fandom while you wait. It’s a classic con-goer tactic for a reason.
