Before You Go: The Prep Work
A great festival day starts before you even leave for the park. First, activate your wristband online and register for cashless payment. This turns your wristband into your wallet, saving you from digging through a bag for your credit card. Speaking of
bags, know the rules. Any bag larger than a small clutch or fanny pack must be clear and no bigger than 12" x 6" x 12". Pack smart: an empty reusable water bottle is non-negotiable, as are sunscreen (non-aerosol, 3.4 oz or less), a hat, and a portable phone charger. Comfortable, closed-toe shoes are your best friend; you'll be walking and standing for hours. Finally, have a transportation plan. Parking at Zilker Park is not an option, so look into the official festival shuttles, public transit, or rideshare options, but be prepared for surge pricing and road closures when leaving.
The Arrival: Timing and Tactics
Festival gates typically open at noon on Friday and 11 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday, closing at 10 p.m. nightly. Arriving early, especially on Friday, allows you to get your bearings, learn the stage layout, and explore the grounds before the biggest crowds descend. Download the official ACL Fest app beforehand to have the festival map and full schedule in your pocket. As soon as you enter, grab a paper map as a backup. The first thing you should do with your group is establish a clear, specific meeting spot for later. Don't just say "the big tree"; pick a landmark like "the left side of the ACL Eats food vendor sign." Cell service can be spotty, so having a designated spot is crucial if you get separated.
Pacing Yourself: Music, Food, and Water
With nine stages and over 100 artists, you simply cannot see everything. Trying to do so is a recipe for exhaustion. Instead, pick three or four "must-see" acts for the day and treat everything else as a bonus. Be realistic about travel time between stages; crossing the park can take longer than you think. Plan your schedule in blocks, grouping artists playing on stages near each other to minimize zig-zagging. Don't forget to eat and hydrate. Free water refill stations are located throughout the park. Make a point to refill your bottle often, even before you feel thirsty. For food, the ACL Eats food court features dozens of local Austin restaurants. Pro tip: eat at off-peak times. The lines get significantly longer right before the evening headliners.
Beyond the Stages: Explore the Park
ACL is more than just a series of concerts. Carve out some time to explore the other offerings. You can find art installations perfect for photos, sponsor tents with free swag and activities, and a market featuring local artisans. It’s a great way to take a break from the massive crowds at the main stages and discover something new. A small blanket or towel can be a lifesaver, giving you a home base to relax on the grass between sets. This is also where you’ll appreciate bringing a bandana; Zilker Park can get very dusty, especially by the second weekend.
The Grand Finale: Headliners and a Smart Exit
As the sun sets, the energy in the park shifts for the headlining acts. The crowds for the two main stages will be massive, so if you want a good spot, you'll need to head over early. This often means making a tough choice, as two major headliners typically play at the same time on opposite ends of the park. When the final song ends, be prepared for the mass exodus. Over 75,000 people will be trying to leave at once. This is where your pre-planned exit strategy comes into play. Know where your shuttle pickup is or where to walk to find a rideshare away from the most congested areas. Having a clear plan to get home will end your first ACL day on a high note, ready to do it all again tomorrow.
