The Plot: A Crash Course
Remember the basics? It's okay if it’s a little fuzzy. The story centers on Moana, the headstrong daughter of a Polynesian chief. A thousand years prior, the demigod Maui stole the mystical heart of the goddess Te Fiti, unleashing a curse that now threatens
Moana's island of Motunui. The crops are failing, the fish are disappearing, and the very life of the island is fading. Chosen by the ocean itself, Moana must defy her father's rules, sail beyond the safety of the reef, find the boastful and reluctant Maui, and compel him to help her return the heart to save her people. It’s an epic hero’s journey filled with monsters, self-discovery, and some very catchy songs.
Meet the New Wayfinder
The biggest question for many is: who is playing Moana? The role has been passed from Auliʻi Cravalho, who voiced the character in the animated films and serves as an executive producer here, to newcomer Catherine Laga'aia. Laga'aia is a 19-year-old Australian actress of Samoan heritage. This is her feature film debut, and she has spoken about her excitement to represent young girls who look like her and to celebrate her Samoan and Pacific Islander heritage. Early reviews have praised her performance, noting she brings a grounded and feisty charm to the beloved character.
You're Welcome: The Rock is Back
Yes, you can breathe easy. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is back, reprising his iconic role as the shape-shifting demigod of the wind and sea, Maui. Johnson, who is also a producer on the film, has a deep personal connection to the story, citing his own cultural heritage and the inspiration of his late grandfather, High Chief Peter Maivia. While Maui's look is less cartoonishly large and more, well, Dwayne Johnson, he brings his signature charisma to the role he made famous. He is joined by Jemaine Clement, who also returns to voice the giant, treasure-hoarding crab, Tamatoa.
Familiar Faces on the Island
The village of Motunui is populated by a talented cast of actors from New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. John Tui plays Chief Tui, Moana's no-nonsense but loving father who forbids any voyaging beyond the reef. Frankie Adams portrays Sina, Moana's playful and supportive mother. And veteran actress Rena Owen steps into the vital role of Gramma Tala, Moana's wise, eccentric grandmother who shares her deep connection to the ocean and encourages her to follow her destiny.
How Far Will the Music Go?
Let's be honest, you're mostly wondering if the songs are still great. The live-action film features the original, award-winning songs from Lin-Manuel Miranda, Mark Mancina, and Opetaia Foa'i. Miranda is also a producer on the new film. You can expect to hear stirring new renditions of hits like "How Far I'll Go" and "You're Welcome." While reviews note the film is a very faithful, beat-for-beat remake of the original, the music remains a highlight, bringing the spectacular adventure to life.
What to Know Before You Go
The film is directed by Thomas Kail, best known for his Tony Award-winning work on the Broadway smash "Hamilton." While his involvement, along with Miranda's, suggests a high level of musical and theatrical quality, early critical reception has been mixed. Many reviews point out that the film is extremely faithful to the 2016 animated original—perhaps too faithful—making it feel redundant for those who already love the first movie. However, others have found it to be an entertaining and visually gorgeous adaptation, anchored by strong lead performances. Ultimately, it's a chance to re-experience a beloved story with your family on the big screen.
