The queen and her consort are the heart of the Black faction, but it's a heart that beats erratically. Their relationship has been a chaotic mix of passion, ambition, and deep-seated resentment. After a tumultuous Season 2 that saw Daemon go rogue at Harrenhal,
their reunion was less a romantic reconciliation and more a political necessity. Daemon ultimately bent the knee, seemingly accepting Rhaenyra as his queen, but the trust between them is fractured. Rhaenyra knows Daemon's loyalty has always been intertwined with his own ambition. Their strength lies in their shared bloodline and two formidable dragons, Caraxes and Syrax. Their weakness is that very same ambition; if their goals diverge even slightly, the entire Black cause could shatter from within. How they navigate their personal baggage will be as critical as any battle plan.
The Greens' Fractured Family: Alicent, Aegon, and Aemond
The Greens are less an alliance and more a hostage situation disguised as a family. Queen Alicent Hightower began the war to place her son, Aegon, on the throne, but has watched her power erode as her violent sons, Aegon and Aemond, steer the ship. With her father Otto dismissed and now captured, Alicent is politically isolated, clinging to the hope of a negotiated peace that her children have no interest in. Aemond, rider of the colossal dragon Vhagar, is the Greens' primary military asset, but he's a reckless force of vengeance. Aegon is a reluctant and cruel king, easily manipulated by those around him, including the insidious Larys Strong. This internal power struggle is their greatest vulnerability. While they control the capital (for now), their leadership is a poisonous snake eating its own tail, making them dangerously unpredictable as the finale approaches.
The Pact of Ice and Fire: Rhaenyra and Cregan Stark
In a war decided by dragonfire, a promise from the North remains one of Rhaenyra’s most powerful assets. When Jacaerys Velaryon flew to Winterfell, he secured the loyalty of Lord Cregan Stark, a stern and honor-bound leader who commands the unwavering loyalty of the Northmen. Their deal, known as the Pact of Ice and Fire, was sealed with a promise of a royal marriage between Jace’s future daughter and Cregan’s son. Though Jacaerys's death complicates the specifics of the pact, the Starks are not known for breaking their word. The Northern armies are tough, battle-hardened, and represent a massive ground force that the Greens cannot easily match. Their drawback is distance. Mobilizing and marching an army from the North takes time, making this alliance a slow-burn threat. Whether Cregan's forces arrive in time to make a difference in the final battles is one of the biggest questions of Season 3.
The Foreign Power: The Greens and The Triarchy
Desperate times call for dangerous allies. With the Velaryon fleet blockading the Gullet and choking King's Landing, the Greens turned to the Triarchy—a volatile alliance of the Free Cities of Myr, Lys, and Tyrosh. This isn't a partnership based on loyalty, but on mutual interest and greed. Ser Tyland Lannister secured their formidable navy by promising them control of the Stepstones, a region they have long coveted and previously fought Daemon and Corlys Velaryon over. This makes the Triarchy a purely mercenary force. They are powerful and crucial for breaking the Blacks' naval supremacy, but their allegiance is only as strong as the gold and territory the Greens can offer. They have no love for Westeros and could easily switch sides or abandon the cause if a better offer emerges, making them the ultimate wild card in the war at sea.
The Riverlands Cauldron: Where Loyalty Is Fluid
While great houses make grand pacts, the war will likely be won or lost in the Riverlands. A patchwork of proud, quarrelsome houses like the Tullys, Blackwoods, and Brackens, the region is geographically vital and fiercely contested. Daemon spent much of Season 2 securing their allegiance for Rhaenyra at Harrenhal, bringing House Tully and others to the Black cause. However, Green armies, led by figures like Jason Lannister, are also marching into this territory. The Riverlands have become the primary battleground, and loyalties here can shift with each victory or defeat. An alliance with a Riverlord is only good until a larger army appears on their doorstep. Control of this region means control of the heart of Westeros, and whichever side can secure it—through force or diplomacy—will hold a decisive advantage heading into the final confrontation.
