The Slang Shortcut
Let's be clear: the problem isn't slang itself. Language evolves, and every generation creates its own lexicon to build community and define itself. The issue is how it's used as a narrative shortcut. When a character's entire personality is reduced to a string
of trendy, often misused, buzzwords, it’s a sign that writers are grabbing for the most superficial signifier of “youth” they can find. It's the screenwriting equivalent of a dad wearing a backwards baseball cap to a high school party. This approach, seen in shows from past years and threatening to crop up in the new season, often backfires. By the time a show is written, filmed, and aired, the slang that was so “now” during pre-production is already six months past its expiration date on social media, resulting in dialogue that feels instantly dated and, worst of all, inauthentic.
What's Lost in Translation?
When the focus is entirely on capturing a fleeting verbal aesthetic, the actual substance of growing up gets lost. The best coming-of-age stories, from classics like “Freaks and Geeks” to modern gems like “Sex Education” or “Derry Girls,” understand that the experience is universal, not terminological. They explore the terrifying, exhilarating, and often mundane realities of forming an identity, navigating friendships that feel like life-or-death alliances, and grappling with a body and heart that seem to have their own agenda. These stories resonate because they tap into the core emotions of confusion, longing, rebellion, and the desperate search for belonging—feelings that don't require a specific vocabulary to be understood. A character's awkward silence can convey more angst than a monologue peppered with the latest TikTok-approved phrases.
The Authenticity Algorithm
So why does this keep happening? It stems from a fundamental misunderstanding of the audience. Writers' rooms, often staffed by people a generation or two removed from their subjects, may rely on trend reports and surface-level observation rather than emotional truth. They mistake the performance of youth online for the reality of it offline. True authenticity isn't about perfectly replicating how a 17-year-old from a specific subculture speaks in a given month. It's about respecting them as complex characters. It's found in the specificity of their family dynamics, the private anxieties they can’t articulate, and the messy, contradictory choices they make. Media often portrays Gen Z as shallow, phone-obsessed caricatures instead of a diverse group shaped by a unique digital and social landscape. A truly authentic show trusts that its audience is smart enough to connect with universal human struggles, regardless of the specific slang used to describe them.
Signs of Hope on the Horizon
All is not lost for the Fall 2026 slate. There are glimmers of hope. HBO’s new dramedy “Youth” and Netflix’s reboot of “A Different World” come with pedigrees that suggest a focus on sharp writing and character depth over fleeting trends. The key will be whether these and other new entries, like Apple TV's thriller “Last Seen,” dare to let their young characters be complicated, flawed, and occasionally silent. A great coming-of-age story doesn't just show us what it's like to be young right now; it reminds us what it was like to be young, period. It connects across generations by focusing on the heart, not just the lingo. That's the challenge for this season's hopefuls: to prove they have something meaningful to say, not just a trendy way of saying it.
