You don't need a microscope to assess quality. You can learn to spot good cashmere with a few simple tests. First, the touch test: high-quality cashmere feels incredibly soft and smooth, not scratchy or overly fuzzy. An excessively fluffy surface can actually indicate the use of shorter, weaker fibers that will lead to pilling. Next, the stretch test: gently pull a small section of the garment. It should bounce back to its original shape. Lower-grade cashmere will sag or stay misshapen. Finally, hold the fabric up to the light.
