First, Who Are These Guys?
The franchise centers on a lovable, deeply unprofessional squad of Vermont State Troopers. They are: Thorny (Jay Chandrasekhar), the unofficial leader; Farva (Kevin Heffernan), the loudmouthed, obnoxious one everyone hates; Mac (Steve Lemme), the practical
joker; Rabbit (Erik Stolhanske), the rookie; and Foster (Paul Soter), the one who’s usually right beside Thorny. They work under the perpetually exasperated Captain O'Hagan (Brian Cox). The comedy comes from the chemistry of the Broken Lizard troupe, who write and star in the films. They’re less about police work and more about finding ways to mess with each other and the unfortunate motorists they pull over.
The Most Important Job Requirement: Shenanigans
The single most important concept in the Super Troopers universe is the art of the prank. From the very first film, their primary motivation has been one-upping the local Spurbury Police Department and, more importantly, each other. This includes the legendary “meow” game, where a trooper has to slip the word “meow” into a conversation with a civilian as many times as possible during a traffic stop. Other key gags include chugging maple syrup, faking out stoners in their car, and Farva’s general existence being a prank on humanity. The comedy is built on their shared history of juvenile antics, which always complicates any real police work they stumble into.
A Quick Rewind: Super Troopers (2001)
The original film introduced us to the squad as their station was on the verge of being shut down due to budget cuts. To save their jobs, they had to prove their worth against the more competent, and far more serious, local police department led by Chief Grady. While trying to out-ticket the local cops, they accidentally uncovered a drug-smuggling ring involving a mysterious Winnebago and a shipment of weed hidden in stuffed-animal toys. Along the way, Foster fell for Ursula (Marisa Coughlan), a Spurbury officer who eventually helped them crack the case. In the end, they save the day, but their station is still closed. However, as heroes, they’re offered jobs with the Spurbury PD, bringing their unique brand of chaos with them.
The Canadian Caper: Super Troopers 2 (2018)
The sequel, famously funded in part by a massive crowdfunding campaign, picked up years later. The gang had been fired from law enforcement and were working in construction. They’re called back into service for a bizarre mission: a small Canadian town is discovered to actually be on American soil, and the troopers are sent to oversee the transition. This puts them in direct conflict with a trio of Canadian Mounties and the town’s mayor, Guy LeFranc (Rob Lowe). The plot involves smuggling, rival law enforcement, and a lot of jokes about American and Canadian stereotypes. They once again uncover a criminal enterprise, save the day, and solidify their status as the most destructive yet somehow effective police unit in the Northeast.

The newest film, which was released on August 7, 2026, centers on Farva getting married. According to early plot details, he is engaged to Thorny's sister, much to Thorny's horror. This family-related chaos serves as the backdrop for a new case, as the troopers are also pulled into an investigation of a new drug ring. All the main players are back, including Captain O'Hagan and Ursula, alongside some new faces. Expect the core dynamic to remain: Farva will be insufferable, pranks will get out of hand, and a serious crime will be solved mostly by accident while the team is busy messing around. Knowing the history of their prank wars and their rivalry with other jurisdictions is all you really need to be ready.
