First, Nail the Bag Itself
Before you even think about what goes inside, you have to get the bag right. ACL has a strict bag policy that can halt your entry if you don’t comply. For 2026, the rules are clear. Small, non-clear clutch purses and fanny packs are allowed as long as they
are 6" x 9" or smaller and have only one pocket. If you need more space, your bag must be completely clear and no larger than 12" x 6" x 12". Hydration packs are also a great option; they are permitted, do not need to be clear, but must be empty upon arrival and have no more than two extra pockets. Following these rules is non-negotiable and the single most important step for a smooth entry.
The Hydration and Health Kit
Austin in October can still be surprisingly hot, and you’ll be on your feet for hours. Staying hydrated is critical. You can bring an empty reusable water bottle or an empty hydration pack to fill up at the free water stations inside the park. This is one of the most common pieces of advice from festival veterans for a reason. Alongside your water bottle, pack a non-aerosol sunscreen of 3.4 ounces or less to protect your skin. A small, travel-sized hand sanitizer is also a must-have for obvious reasons. Finally, consider adding factory-sealed electrolyte packets to your kit; they can be a lifesaver for a quick energy boost late in the day.
Your Personal Power Grid
Between taking photos, finding your friends, and checking the festival app, your phone battery will drain faster than you expect. A dead phone means no way to connect with your crew or call for a ride home. Pack a fully charged portable battery pack and the necessary cord. While there are often charging stations available at the festival, they can be crowded, and having your own power source provides peace of mind and keeps you mobile. Make this a non-negotiable part of your tech kit; you won't regret it when you're capturing the final headliner's set with battery to spare.
The Comfort and Convenience Crew
A few small items can make a huge difference in your overall comfort. The ground at Zilker Park can get dusty, so many regulars recommend bringing a bandana. It can be used as a dust mask, a sweatband, or to cool yourself down with a splash of water. A small blanket or towel is also a great addition for sitting on the grass between sets. Since Texas weather is unpredictable, a compact rain poncho that takes up almost no space is a smart inclusion. Finally, a pair of earplugs can provide welcome relief during loud sets or when you find yourself a bit too close to the speakers.
Money, ID, and Getting In
ACL is a completely cashless event. You’ll need a credit card, debit card, or mobile payment option for all food, drinks, and merchandise. You can also link your payment method to your festival wristband for easy tap-and-go purchases. Even if you set this up, it's wise to bring a physical card as a backup in case your phone dies. While you don't need an ID to enter the festival, you absolutely will need a government-issued ID if you plan on purchasing alcohol. Keep your ID and a backup credit card in a secure pocket in your bag to avoid any issues.
Know What to Leave at Home
Just as important as knowing what to bring is knowing what’s prohibited. Security will confiscate forbidden items, so don't risk it. Leave all aerosol containers (including sunscreen), professional cameras with detachable lenses, umbrellas, coolers, hammocks, and outside food or beverages behind. Smoking and vaping are also banned in all Austin city parks, including Zilker. A quick review of the full prohibited items list on the official ACL website before you leave home can save you a lot of time and frustration at the gate.
