The Latin Grammy Awards are a benchmark for excellence, but they're also constantly evolving. A new change for 2026 is set to make major waves, finally giving Portuguese-language urban music its own album-level award. Here’s how it works.
A New Field of Play
The Latin Recording
Academy has officially upgraded its recognition of Portuguese-language urban music for the 27th Annual Latin Grammy Awards. Starting in 2026, what was previously a performance-based award ('Best Portuguese-Language Urban Performance') will now be an album-focused category: 'Best Portuguese-Language Urban Album'. This shift was announced in March 2026 as part of the Academy's ongoing effort to better reflect the modern musical landscape. The new category is specifically for vocal albums from solo artists, duos, or groups that contain at least 51% new material and have a minimum of five tracks or 15 minutes of runtime. Crucially, 60% of the lyrics must be in Portuguese, solidifying a dedicated space for artists from Brazil and Portugal who were previously vying for attention in broader, often Spanish-dominated fields.
The Long Road to an Album Award
This isn't a change that happened in a vacuum. It's the culmination of years of explosive growth and a long-standing struggle for recognition. For decades, Brazilian artists, despite representing a massive and influential music market, have been notoriously underrepresented in the top, general-field categories at the Latin Grammys. Most nominations and wins for Brazilians have been confined to the Portuguese-language specific fields, effectively segregating them from the main event. The 'Best Portuguese-Language Urban Performance' category, introduced in 2023, was a step in the right direction. It acknowledged the global power of genres like Brazilian funk, trap, and hip-hop. But by focusing only on single tracks, it still fell short of honoring the comprehensive artistic statements made through full albums. This new album category signals a deeper commitment from the Academy, recognizing that the urban music scenes in Brazil and Portugal are producing bodies of work that deserve to be judged as such.
Who Stands to Gain?
The creation of this category opens a direct path to a Latin Grammy for a vibrant class of artists. Looking at the nominees for the 27th annual awards gives a clear picture of the talent now in the spotlight. Contenders for the inaugural award include AJULLIACOSTA with 'Novo Testamento', BUDAH with 'FREQUÊNCIA LUNAR', and Don L's 'CARO Vapor II'. Veteran rapper Emicida, a past Latin Grammy winner, is also in the running with 'Emicida Racional VL 2 - Mesmas Cores & Mesmos Valores', alongside Matuto S.A. with 'Terra Vermelha: Do interior pro interior'. This diverse list showcases the breadth of the genre, from established forces to emerging voices. For these artists, the category provides more than just a chance at a trophy; it offers a platform for global visibility that was previously much harder to attain. An album win carries significant weight, validating an entire project and the creative team behind it.
Reshaping the 'Latin Music' Landscape
This move is about more than just an awards show; it's about redefining what 'Latin music' means to a global audience. The term has often been used as a shorthand for Spanish-language music, but this change helps formally broaden that definition. By creating a dedicated album award, the Latin Recording Academy acknowledges that the Portuguese-language urban scene is a major pillar of Latin music culture, not a niche sub-genre. According to Manuel Abud, CEO of the Latin Recording Academy, these kinds of updates are driven directly by the membership to ensure the awards effectively represent the creators they serve. This evolution helps the Grammys stay relevant and credible, celebrating the music that people are actually listening to and creating across Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula. It's a structural recognition that the sounds coming from cities like Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Lisbon are distinct, powerful, and worthy of their own prestigious honor.
