The Instant Portrait
Some of the best pilots ever written don't waste a second. They introduce their protagonist through a single, defining action that tells you everything you need to know about who they are and what drives them. Think of the opening moments of 'Breaking
Bad'. We don't meet Walter White in his classroom; we meet him in his underwear, frantically driving an RV through the desert with two unconscious bodies sliding around in the back. He is a man in absolute chaos, well over his head. That single, frantic image is a perfect portrait of his entire journey. It’s a promise from the showrunners: 'This is who this man is, and this is the kind of high-stakes pandemonium you can expect'. Action is character, and a great pilot proves it immediately.
The Grand Monologue
Another classic technique is to let the character introduce themselves with their own words, often through a bit of dialogue so sharp and specific it could only belong to them. It’s less about what they’re doing and more about how they see the world. In the pilot of 'The West Wing', President Bartlet is off-screen for a surprisingly long time, built up by his staff's frantic energy. When he finally appears, he launches into a righteous, intelligent, and thunderous tirade that immediately establishes him as the smartest, most commanding person in any room he enters. This kind of introduction establishes a character's voice, intellect, and core philosophy before the main plot even truly kicks into gear.
The Intriguing Question Mark
Sometimes, the most compelling introduction is the one that tells you almost nothing at all. Instead of giving you a clear picture, the pilot presents its character as a mystery to be solved. The premiere of 'Lost' is the ultimate example. A man in a suit wakes up dazed in a jungle, then runs onto a beach filled with the flaming wreckage of a plane crash. We don't know his name, his profession, or how he ended up there. All we know is that he is a survivor and seems compelled to help others. By withholding information, the writers create an irresistible vacuum. The audience leans in, desperate to fill in the blanks. This technique turns the viewer into a detective, making them an active participant in discovering who these people are.
The Subversive First Impression
Then there are the shows that introduce a character in a way that feels familiar, only to pull the rug out from under the audience. These introductions play with our expectations. In 'Fleabag', we meet our protagonist during a sexual encounter, but the defining moment isn't the act itself—it's the moment she breaks the fourth wall and speaks directly to us. This stylistic choice instantly creates an intimate, conspiratorial bond between her and the viewer. It signals that this isn't a standard comedy-drama; it’s a deeply personal, unfiltered confession. By subverting the typical 'flawed single woman' trope with a bold narrative device, the show immediately announces its unique and unforgettable voice.
