The Endless First Act

The most common culprit is a pilot episode that functions as one long, drawn-out first act. Showrunners face immense pressure to establish a whole new world: the characters, the rules, the core conflict, and the overarching theme. In an effort to make sure the audience understands everything, they front-load the premiere with exposition. We get endless scenes of characters explaining their backstories to each other, ponderous voice-overs spelling out the stakes, and long, lingering shots of the setting. While world-building is essential, great premieres weave this information into action. When a show spends its entire first hour setting the table without ever serving the main course, viewers are left checking their watches, wondering when the story will actually begin.

Mistaking Brooding for Plotting

In a binge-driven world, the goal is no longer just to get you to watch the premiere; it’s to get you to watch the entire season. The thinking is that if they can just get you over the initial hump, the later payoff will hook you for the long haul.
