A Teenage Genius's Melody
The journey of “’Round Midnight” begins not in a smoke-filled 1950s nightclub, but in the mind of a teenage Thelonious Monk. It’s believed he composed the core melody as early as 1936, when he was just 18 or 19 years old. For years, it was a piece he worked
on, a personal tune without a title or a public life. In 1943, he finally copyrighted it under the name “I Need You So,” complete with lyrics by a friend named Thelma Murray. At this point, it was just one of many compositions by a brilliant but still obscure pianist, years away from the widespread recognition he deserved. Monk was an architect of the bebop revolution, but his own percussive, angular style was so unique that it took the jazz world time to catch up.
Enter Cootie Williams
The song’s path to fame took a sharp turn thanks to two people: pianist Bud Powell and big band leader Cootie Williams. Powell, a close friend and protégé of Monk's, was playing in Williams's orchestra and convinced him to record the tune. On August 22, 1944, the Cootie Williams Orchestra laid down the first-ever recording of the song, retitled “’Round Midnight.” But there was a catch. Williams added a short, eight-bar interlude to the arrangement and, in a move that would muddy the song’s legacy for decades, took a co-composer credit. Williams’s version became his orchestra’s theme song, giving the melody its first taste of fame, but it also meant that Monk, the song’s originator, had to share legal ownership. That interlude composed by Williams is almost never played in modern versions, yet his name remains on the copyright.
The Dizzy and Miles Effect
Even with the Williams recording, “’Round Midnight” wasn’t yet the titan of the jazz repertoire it would become. Its status was cemented by two other giants: Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis. In 1946, Gillespie arranged the tune for his big band, adding a dramatic new introduction that has since become a standard part of the song—so much so that Monk himself later incorporated it into his own performances. But the song’s watershed moment came at the 1955 Newport Jazz Festival. Miles Davis, then in a career slump, delivered a now-legendary muted trumpet solo on “’Round Midnight” that stunned the audience and critics alike. The performance was a massive comeback for Davis, landing him a career-changing contract with Columbia Records and leading to his iconic 1957 album, “’Round About Midnight.” From that point on, the song was officially enshrined in the jazz canon.
Monk Reclaims His Masterpiece
While others were popularizing his tune, Monk himself didn’t record his own first version as a bandleader until November 1947 for Blue Note Records. Over his long career, he would revisit the song numerous times, each version a masterclass in his idiosyncratic genius. His solo piano take on the 1957 album “Thelonious Himself” is a particularly intimate and revealing performance. Despite the competing claims and collaborative additions, the song is, in spirit and in soul, quintessentially Monk. Its haunting melody, with its sophisticated harmonies and melancholic beauty, could only have come from him. It became the most-recorded jazz standard ever composed by a jazz musician, a testament to its power. In 1993, Monk's quintet version was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, a posthumous honor solidifying his ownership in the cultural imagination.
