The Power of Shadows and Light
The oldest trick in the book is still the most effective: what you can’t see is scarier than what you can. Great horror cinematographers are masters of low-key lighting, a technique that uses deep shadows and high contrast to hide more than it reveals.
This forces your imagination to do the heavy lifting, populating the darkness with unspoken threats. Think of how films like The Conjuring use pockets of shadow in an ordinary home to create a sense of lurking danger, or how the found-footage style of The Blair Witch Project uses the limited beam of a camera light to make the surrounding woods feel infinite and menacing. When you're watching, pay attention to the corners of the frame. The most terrifying things are often what's partially obscured or about to emerge from the dark.
Unsettling, Off-Kilter Angles
Have you ever noticed how a scene just feels wrong? You might be seeing a Dutch angle. This is when the camera is tilted on its axis, making the horizon line slant. It's a classic visual shorthand for disorientation and psychological unease. First popularized in German Expressionist films like The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, this technique makes the world of the film feel unstable and unnatural. Directors also use low-angle shots to make villains or monsters seem powerful and domineering, while high-angle shots can make protagonists appear vulnerable and small. In The Silence of the Lambs, notice how antagonists are often shot from slightly below, giving them a subtle, menacing authority in the frame.
The Terrifying Long Take
A key tool for building suspense is the long take—an uninterrupted shot that lasts much longer than a typical one. Instead of cutting away, the camera forces you to stay in the moment, stretching the tension to an almost unbearable degree. It creates a feeling of being trapped, with no escape from whatever is about to happen. Stanley Kubrick was a master of this, most famously in The Shining, where the Steadicam follows Danny on his tricycle through the Overlook Hotel's empty, echoing halls. The smooth, gliding camera and the refusal to cut create a creeping dread that something is just around the next corner. More modern films like It Follows use long takes in their opening scenes to establish a feeling of anxious bewilderment before the true horror even begins.
The Killer’s Point of View
Some of the most iconic shots in horror history put you directly into the killer’s shoes. The point-of-view (POV) shot is a powerful tool for generating fear and paranoia. By showing the world through the antagonist's eyes, the filmmaker makes the audience a complicit voyeur. The opening of John Carpenter’s Halloween is a masterclass in this, presenting a long, unbroken POV shot from the perspective of a young Michael Myers as he moves through his house and commits murder. This technique hides the killer's identity while making their presence feel intensely personal and invasive. It’s also used from the victim’s perspective in found-footage films, placing the audience directly in the path of the terror.
Framing and Negative Space
Great cinematographers don't just point the camera; they compose the entire frame to create psychological effects. One powerful technique is using frames-within-the-frame, like doorways, windows, or hallways. This can make a character appear trapped, isolated, or watched. Think about how often you see a character framed perfectly in a dark doorway in the background of a shot. Another technique is the deliberate use of negative space—large, empty areas within the frame. Your eye is naturally drawn to the subject, but your brain remains aware of the unnerving emptiness around them, creating a subconscious anxiety that something could appear in that void at any second. Ari Aster's Hereditary uses this brilliantly, placing unsettling details in the background or in shadowy corners, rewarding attentive viewers with a deeper sense of dread.
