1. The Weak Signal is a Battery Vampire
The biggest unseen battery killer at any festival is poor cell service. With tens of thousands of people in one park, cell towers get overloaded. Your phone, ever helpful, desperately searches for a stronger signal, boosting its power and draining your
battery at an astonishing rate. This constant “signal hunting” is why your phone can go from 100% to 50% by mid-afternoon, even if you’ve barely touched it. A simple fix is to pop it into Airplane Mode for a while, especially during a set when you're not actively using it. You can still take photos and videos, and you’ll save a huge chunk of power.
2. Your Phone is Now Your Ticket and Wallet
ACL Fest is a fully cashless event. Every purchase, from food and drinks to that band t-shirt you must have, is made with a credit card, mobile payment, or a wristband you link to your bank account. If you’re relying on Apple Pay or Google Pay, a dead phone means you’re cut off from everything. Even if you use the cashless wristband, you often need your phone to activate it or check your balance. Without power, you can’t buy a water bottle or a slice of pizza, turning your festival fun into a frustrating ordeal.
3. The Festival App is Your Only Map
Zilker Park is massive, with nine stages and countless vendors spread out across its sprawling grounds. The official ACL Fest app is your essential guide, containing the festival map, performance schedules, and emergency alerts. Forgetting which stage a band is on or trying to find the nearest restroom becomes a major challenge without it. Veteran festival-goers often recommend screenshotting the schedule and map before you arrive. That way, you can access crucial information without needing a signal, saving battery and time.
4. Finding Your Friends is a Full-Time Job
Losing your friends in a sea of people is a classic festival experience. Coordinating a meetup spot via text is the modern solution, but it’s a significant battery drain. Every “Where are you?” and “I’m by the sound booth!” message chips away at your power. Establish a physical, old-school meeting spot for your group when you arrive, like a specific art installation or food vendor. This gives you a fallback plan that doesn't rely on technology when someone’s phone inevitably dies.
5. You're a Photographer, Videographer, and Social Media Star
From the headliner’s epic light show to the perfect sunset selfie with the Austin skyline, the temptation to capture every moment is real. But using your camera, especially for video, is one of the most power-intensive things you can do. Add in posting to Instagram or Snapchat, and you're putting your battery through a marathon. To conserve energy, consider living in the moment a bit more and being selective with your shots. Dimming your screen brightness and enabling low power mode will also make a surprisingly big difference.
6. The Post-Show Escape Requires Power
The festival ends, the lights come up, and thousands of people pour out of Zilker Park at once. Getting home is the final boss battle. Calling a rideshare requires a working phone and enough battery to navigate to a designated pickup area and identify your driver. The free festival shuttles are a great option, but you'll still need your phone to check schedules and routes. A dead phone at 10 p.m. can leave you feeling stranded and stressed, ending an otherwise amazing day on a low note.
