Christian Pulisic: Captain America
If you know one name, it's probably his. Christian Pulisic is the undisputed face of American soccer, a dynamic winger for Italian giant AC Milan nicknamed "Captain America" for a reason. [7, 16] After a record-breaking move to England's Chelsea, where
he became the first American to play in and win the UEFA Champions League final, Pulisic has found a new level in Italy, becoming one of AC Milan's most important attackers. [39, 16] He is the all-time leading American goalscorer in Europe's top five leagues and the creative engine of the USMNT. [16] For the U.S. to make a deep run in 2026, Pulisic will need to be at his brilliant best, creating chances and scoring key goals just as he does for his club. [39]
Tyler Adams: The General
Every great team needs a floor general, and for the USMNT, that's Tyler Adams. The youngest captain at the 2022 World Cup, Adams is the team's heartbeat and defensive anchor in midfield. [5, 9] Playing for AFC Bournemouth in the English Premier League, Adams is renowned for his relentless energy, tactical intelligence, and leadership. [5, 25] When he's on the field, the entire team is more organized and confident. As former coach Gregg Berhalter said, "He is the general... when he talks, people listen." [9] After battling injuries, a healthy Adams is arguably the single most important player for the team's structure, tasked with shielding the defense and setting the tempo against the world's best. [22, 19]
Weston McKennie: The Engine
Weston McKennie is the team's Swiss Army knife and powerhouse midfielder, playing for one of the most storied clubs in the world, Juventus in Italy. [1, 3] Known for his versatility and tireless work rate, McKennie can—and has—played nearly every position on the field for his club, becoming an indispensable and respected player. [3, 4] He combines a fierce, competitive grit with a surprising level of skill, contributing both defensively and in the attack. [12, 32] Alongside Adams and Musah, he forms a midfield trio dubbed "MMA" that has the power and talent to compete with any in the world. His experience at a top club and his infectious energy make him a core leader. [9]
Folarin Balogun: The Goal Scorer
For years, the U.S. searched for a reliable, top-tier striker. They found one in Folarin Balogun. After a breakout season in France, Balogun transferred to AS Monaco and has become their unquestioned No. 9, scoring goals in both Ligue 1 and the Champions League. [24, 13] After representing England at youth levels, the New York-born striker committed to the USMNT in 2023 and immediately became the team's most dangerous attacking weapon. [24] He provides a clinical finishing ability that the team has desperately needed. [13] His performances for Monaco, where he was named the club's Player of the Season for 2025-26, show he is ready for the big stage. [24]
Gio Reyna: The Wild Card
Perhaps the most naturally gifted and technically skilled player in the entire pool, Gio Reyna is the son of USMNT legend Claudio Reyna. [14, 31] An attacking midfielder who came up through Borussia Dortmund's academy, Reyna has shown flashes of world-class potential, capable of a game-changing pass or goal at any moment. [11, 28] However, his career has been a rollercoaster of incredible highs and frustrating injuries and inconsistencies. [22, 31] Now at Borussia Mönchengladbach, the hope is that consistent playing time will unlock the generational talent many believe him to be. [14, 31] If Reyna can stay healthy and find his rhythm, he could be the creative spark that elevates the U.S. from a good team to a great one.
Yunus Musah: The Connector
Born in New York, raised in Italy and England, and developed in academies at Arsenal and Valencia, Yunus Musah has a unique pedigree. [17] Now teammates with Pulisic at AC Milan, Musah is a dynamic box-to-box midfielder known for his powerful dribbling and ability to carry the ball through defensive lines, linking the defense to the attack. [29, 35] Though he's still refining his game at the elite Serie A level, his energy and skill set are crucial for the USMNT's midfield engine room. [17, 30] His partnership with Adams and McKennie is vital to the team's success, providing the crucial connection between all phases of play.
