Become a Master of the Map
Before you even think about your festival fit, your first move is to study the grounds. The official Camp Flog Gnaw app and website are your best friends. When the festival map drops, usually a bit before the event, download it. Screenshot it. Learn the landscape
of Dodger Stadium. Identify the stages—typically named 'Camp,' 'Flog,' and 'Gnaw'—and pinpoint where the main carnival game and ride sections are located in relation to them. The walk between the main stages can be a 10-to-15-minute journey through thick crowds, a crucial factor when planning your moves. Knowing that the Ferris wheel is a trek from the main stage helps you make smarter, quicker decisions in the moment.
The 'Must-See' vs. 'Nice-to-See' Triage
You cannot see everything. Accept this now. The key to a regret-free weekend is triage. A few days before the festival, the set times will be released, often creating intentional, painful overlaps. Go through the lineup and create two lists: your Tier 1 'must-sees'—the non-negotiable artists you’d be devastated to miss—and your Tier 2 'nice-to-sees.' Your Tier 1 sets are the anchors of your schedule. Everything else, including the ring toss, fits around them. If a Tier 2 artist's 30-minute set conflicts with getting a good spot for your favorite headliner, you have to be ruthless and skip it. This strategy ensures you’re present for the moments that matter most to you.
Weaponize the Early Hours
The festival gates typically open at noon. While many attendees trickle in later, the first couple of hours are a golden opportunity. The lines for everything, from merch to carnival games, are at their absolute shortest. If you have an Unlimited Carnival Games pass, this is the time to use it. Arrive early, get through security, and immediately head for the games or the iconic Ferris wheel. You can knock out a significant chunk of the carnival experience before the major crowds descend and the first big acts of the day take the stage. This frees up your evening for pure, uninterrupted music.
Use Artist Downtime Strategically
There will inevitably be lulls in your personal schedule. Maybe there’s a 90-minute gap between two of your must-see acts, or perhaps a hugely popular headliner that you're not interested in is playing. This is your primetime for games. While tens of thousands of people are packed around one stage, the lines for the carnival attractions will drastically decrease. It's a classic counter-programming move. You might miss an artist everyone else is seeing, but you’ll get to experience a core part of the Flog Gnaw atmosphere without the frustrating wait times. It’s all about spotting those windows of opportunity and seizing them.
Know When to Bail on a Line
Whether it’s for a prize, a ride, or a specific food vendor, you need an exit strategy. Set a mental time limit. If you’ve been waiting 20 minutes to throw a basketball and you hear the opening bassline of a set you wanted to catch, it’s time to cut your losses. The memory of seeing an artist you love will last much longer than the fleeting satisfaction of winning an oversized hat. The goal isn't to do everything; it's to do the things that bring you the most joy. Sometimes that means abandoning a queue and sprinting (safely!) across the parking lot to sing along with your favorite song.
