The Premise: Pranks, Not Police Work
The Super Troopers saga centers on a dysfunctional, prank-loving squad of Vermont State Troopers more interested in messing with each other and the motorists they pull over than in actual law enforcement. In the first film, their station is on the verge
of being shut down, forcing them into a turf war with the more professional, but far less fun, Spurbury Police Department. The core conflict is always the same: our lovable idiots versus a slightly more competent authority, with their jobs perpetually on the line.
The Squad: Your Favorite Highway Heroes
The heart of the series is the five members of the Broken Lizard comedy troupe. There's Thorny (Jay Chandrasekhar), the unofficial leader; Mac (Steve Lemme), the most committed prankster; Foster (Paul Soter), the slightly more level-headed one; and Rabbit (Erik Stolhanske), the perpetually tormented rookie. And then there’s Rodney Farva (Kevin Heffernan), the loud-mouthed, obnoxious, and universally despised wildcard who is constantly trying to get back into the patrol car. Their chemistry and constant one-upmanship are what make the movies legendary.
The Captain: John O'Hagan
Every group of lovable morons needs a perpetually exasperated boss, and for the troopers, that’s Captain John O’Hagan (Brian Cox). While he often seems moments away from a full-blown aneurysm, O'Hagan secretly has a soft spot for his crew of screw-ups. He’s not above joining in on the gags—he invented the “bulletproof cup” prank, after all—but his primary role is to deliver stern, fatherly lectures before ultimately having his troopers' backs when it counts.
The Gags: A Litany of Shenanigans
The plots are secondary; the real lore is in the running jokes. The “Cat Game,” where troopers see how many times they can say “meow” during a traffic stop, is iconic. So is Farva’s desperate attempt to order a “liter of cola” (it’s French!) at a fast-food joint. Other classics include chugging maple syrup, the “snozzberries taste like snozzberries” line, and a general obsession with mustaches. These gags are the connective tissue of the franchise.
The Story So Far: Drugs, Mounties, and Mayhem
In Super Troopers (2001), the squad stumbles upon a drug-smuggling ring operated by the local Spurbury PD, and in their own bumbling way, they manage to save the day, only to see their station shut down anyway. They end up becoming Spurbury police officers themselves. In Super Troopers 2 (2018), the team is brought back to patrol a small Canadian town that is set to be annexed by the U.S. They clash with the local Mounties, uncover a smuggling plot, and generally cause an international incident before once again, accidentally, succeeding.
What You Need for Super Troopers 3
The newest film, which hit theaters on August 7, 2026, revolves around Farva's chaotic wedding to Thorny's sister. While Thorny tries to sabotage the union, the troopers get pulled into another drug ring investigation. All you need to know is that the same dynamics are in play: the guys are still lovable idiots, Farva is still a walking disaster, and their methods are, as always, highly unorthodox. You don't need to have memorized every detail of the first two films to enjoy the ride.
