As the last band's gear rolls off, a controlled chaos erupts. The first and most fundamental sound a production pro listens for is silence's opposite: a clean signal. Before any music is made, the Front of House (FOH) and monitor engineers conduct a 'line
check'. This isn't the 'check, one, two' for the audience; it’s a rapid-fire, private conversation. Listening intently on headphones, they confirm every single input—from the lead vocal mic to the kick drum—is sending a clear, noise-free signal to the mixing console. They’re listening for the crisp tap on a microphone or a specific tone sent from the stage. What they don't want to hear is just as important: the hum of a bad cable, the crackle of a faulty connection, or the buzz of electronic interference. Taming Feedback Before It Bites
Once signals are clean, the focus snaps to the stage monitors—the speakers pointing back at the musicians. An artist who can't hear themselves properly is flying blind. Here, the monitor engineer performs a crucial, counter-intuitive task: they create feedback on purpose. This process is called 'ringing out the monitors'. While the monitor world is being dialed in, the FOH engineer out in the audience is starting to paint the first strokes of their sonic picture. They can't blast the PA system during a changeover, so they rely on high-quality headphones. With the line check complete, they have a basic 'gain structure' set for each instrument, establishing a healthy input level. They’ll quickly listen to the most critical elements—often the kick drum, bass, and lead vocal—to make sure they have a good starting point.
